Apart from side-scrolling platformers, Mario has spent time in JRPGs, jumping into paintings, cleaning up the environment, and zooming around planetoids.

Point is that Nintendo does a wide variety of unique things in Mario games and almost all of it is good. So you could have five Mario fans, each itching for their favorite Mario game. Nintendo will scratch one of those itches and leave four people still irritated.

Look at Zelda. When Skyward Sword came out, you had people complaining that it was too hand-holdy and not open enough like Ocarina of Time or WW or Twilight Princess. When BotW came out, you had another (albeit, much smaller) group of people complain that it didn't focus on story and have a bombastic orchestral soundtrack like Skyward Sword.

This is normal.

Once it releases these b**ches will shut up

Agreed same thing happened with Mario 3D World.

Wait, are we pretending like the reception to Super Mario Oddysey has been negative? I have seen almost nothing except praise and excitement..

if you could also stop liking the Switch please that'd be lovely.

Those crowds waiting to buy it? no no.... they're complaining about the Wii-U games being ported from it, lowering the value of that system... yup.

Nintendo fans just can't stop complaining.

"Odyssey...yesseee!" - worst lyric of the year, maybe the decade.

I think Nintendo has made a lot of errors in the tone of this game. It feels too far on the cutesy side, and things like New Donk City seem lazy - like Barkley says, if Mario, Pauline and Donkey Kong all come from New Donk City, why are they cartoonish freaks while everyone else is an ordinary person? It's just wrong.

These complaints seem trivial because you love Mario so much that you have blinders on. I love Mario too, and I'm going to buy this game, but I'm afraid the general public sees Bowser in a white and pink tux or Mario mixed in the "real world", and thinks, "Not for me, why is this so weird / kiddie?"

I remember defending Paper Mario like this way back in the late 90s. Paper Mario is awesome and I still like the cartoony style, but it hasn't done anything to make Mario or Nintendo more popular. Neither will Odyssey. I want more than a fun but weird 3D Mario - I want Nintendo to kick butt and expand the popularity of Mario and Switch.

Who cares about the lyrics and the tone of the game is more along the lines of the Galaxy games but with a different setting and you know you can't take Mario's origins seriously Nintendo has been retconning that since forever.

I like the idea of having him in a city like this similar to Sonic Adventure. But it looks weird to me the way they designed it.

People were okay with Sonic skateboarding in San Francisco but Mario riding a scooter in New York?? no way!!

They launched the Switch: Where's virtual console!??

They announced the SNES mini: Where's Chrono Trigger!??

Metroid 2 Remake: Why the new mechanics and story!?

New Nintendo 2DS: Why!??

Why not complain about that? We've had 2 consoles after the introduction of VC. Each one has had a total reset. And no avaiblity of stuff from the start. Coupled with the fact they never get through the whole catalog.

Why not have Chrono Trigger? When people by rehases. They expect all the greats. Not just 90% of them. It be like if Star Wars remastered episodes 1-3 and stopped.

This one I don't get. Zero Mission did the same thing. It's not like this will be Resident Evil 2's remake. Where Capcom will change it so it matches RE 4-6.

This should of been used when the crap 2DS version came out. Not now. I would of bought this if this came out the same time the 3DS XL.

I agree Nintendo needs to step up this VC shit, they started good with the Wii era then only went downwards but they're obviously working on it for Switch so people need to focus on and support new games and not the VC.

I love Chrono Trigger it's one of the best RPGs ever made but if we learned anything from the NES Mini is that you wont get all the best and favorite games the NES has to offer because reasons unless you hack the system. Besides we are getting Star Fox 2 supposedly the final version yet we are still complaining about Chrono Trigger

Yeah Metroid fans are known to be very vocal complainers

There are still lots of people who've never owned a 3DS now that Nintendo is getting more and more popular thanks to their smartphone apps they need to capitalise on this by releasing yet another iteration in their 3DS family line we all know Nintendo has been doing this for years with GB GBA and what not I'm sure getting a New2DS.

At the above post, you missed my sarcasm by a mile I fear, vocal minority don't represent the fanbase as a whole, just because you seen someone loud complaining about something, doesn't mean everyone is, just means you should focus on the voices that matter, like all the awards this game won at E3 and for how the Switch is selling faster than hot cakes

Why not check me out on youtube and help me on the way to 2k subs over at www.youtube.com/stormcloudlive

The level is fine imo. It's not like the whole game's premise is realistic, and besides, it's more of a cartoonish city. The only realistic aesthetic would be the design of the NPC's in it besides Pauline. People are feeling alienated for no reason.

It's also a minority that share this sentiment. We've had Mario Strikers look much more realistic than New Donk City. Petty.

To be honest the New Donk City stuff didn't really surprise me. Nintendo's been dropping hints for a while:

Odyessy's start screen even has a travel brochure layout almost like what Mario is holding above.

I didn't miss anything, I just added my piece to the facts.

i never said everyone is complaining it''s just that lots of fans are complaining, voices that matter are the fans which I'm focusing on.

I guess I'm one of those that think city looks quite terrible...so much that after the first reveal I thought to myself "what were they thinking"...but all other ingame stuff I've seen during E3 looked really good, so, while I still think that city is not very good, overall, I like the game.

I would actually like to know what kind of negative reception is out there for Mario Odyssey, especially those who have had hands on experience. That would be an interesting read.

This is my personal opinion, but I'm slightly skeptical about this game, as a person who has recently played Sunshine.

I was watching a few playthroughs of this game, and I was disappointed with the fact that half of the moons in New Donk City could be obtained by just talking to NPC's. In terms of platforming, New Donk City feels ostentatious and purposeless, but we'll have to see if that's really the case when the game comes out. Not that the stage shouldn't be in the game (I believe the realistic complaints are frivolous) but I'm hoping the stage isn't meant to be a main one in the game;hopefully just a friendly area to roam in.

I believe the game will be better than Sunshine, though, provided there are many levels in the game, and each with much to do in them that are unique. I don't want this game to just be purposelessly huge for the sake of being huge. People were rolling fast in an empty space in the Sand Kingdom just to get to a certain moon. For a platformer I wish there was more platforming involved.

To be fair Mario does look really out of place there though. It just doesn't seem to fit in with the Mario universe so it looks a bit odd.

But then I saw Mario jumping rope and it made sense.

Over all the game looks excellent, new donk city just brings back Sonic 06 memories *shudder*
