Forums - Politics Discussion - Illinois sweetened beverage tax goes into effect July 1st 2017-moved to the 12th now

Trunkin said:
The tax includes juice? Are you sure, spurge? Cause that sounds ridiculous if true. Juice is expensive enough as it is.

Generally these taxes have affected any drink with added sugar in them.

So any juice with added sweetner, even 0 calorie sweetereners, get hit with this tax. So cranberry juice would get hit given that generally has added sugar. But it also adds a tax to milk alternitives like soy milk.

Its just a bullshit way to raise tax revenue and will have zero impact on public health. Its a scam left wing cities keep falling for.

This tax doesn't attack anyone. It's probably in effect to steer people away from obesity and unhealthy life choices by incentevising, natural non-articficially sweetend juices and tees as well as water over sodas and all that crap that rots your teeth away and gives you a heart attack by 50.

It sucks that your store is right on the border and that you might loose buisness because it isn't a nationwide law, but it isn't neccissarily a bad law.

I agree it doesn't attack anyone per se, but its a scam. This won't affect health because people will still consume shit food and sugary snacks, the sales of that stuff will likely go up. Maybe people will make their own high sugar drinks to save money, like Kool-aid or other flavor powder.

The only affective way to improve health among the people is to give incentives for living healthy lifestyles. Such as lower health insurance premiums.

So again, this is a scam to raise tax revenue. Its still not giving people an incentive to being healthier.

I know that the left is super evil and stuff, but has anything similar ever been implemented to be able to tell whether people will just buy more sugary snacks isntead?

Left wing politicians are always looking for ways to raise tax revenue and disguise it with good intentions. So yeah... that's kinda evil. Its no coincidence blue states tend to have the highest taxes.

I'm simply pointing out there are still plenty of other alternatives to get fat versus sugary drinks. I mean a large burger and fries alone can hit 2000 calories. Throw in any common dessert and you've already consumed the same calories of a sugary drink.

This sugary drink tax is nonsense, it creates no incentive to getting healthy. You could even go to a different city and stock up on sugary drinks, unless there is sugar gestapo stopping that.

For the record, I personally don't believe people should consume these drinks. But higher taxes doesn't solve the problem. If the goal is genuinely encouraging healthier lifestyles, find a way for people to save money. But that isn't what this is about, the goal is to take money from people. Its like cigarettes, if everybody stopped smoking... cities would be fucked from all the lost tax revenue.

What if you're a diabetic who needs sugar at times, this fucking tax really makes life hell for people like myself, they halved the amount of sugar which is lucozade means that I now have to use other methods of getting sugar back up when I'm in need including now bringing around 2 bottles instead of one because idiots don't understand that taking sugar away from drinks isn't going to stop people making bad choices and drinking more if you want it.

There we go- if you're diabetic, then you aren't super healthy.

The US has a huge issue with obesity. Michelle tried reforming school lunches, they kept pushing exercise everywhere, and now we see fat tax. What else can we do? The food industry obviously won't help- it'll only make it worse. After all, many industries paid scientists to fabricate studies in their favour. It's why people avoid fats but are fine with eating sugar, grains, dairy, and red meat to their graves

I feel bad for people like you. Diabetes isn't fun for anyone. Trust me, having relatives with it lets me know they cannot control it. However, is soda the only efficient way to solve your sugar issue? My cousin uses lollipops or candy typically

What the actual fuck....

I have Type 1 Diabetes, it effectively has/had nothing to do with being unhealthy to develope it and most certainly had nothing to do with drinking soda

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diabetes_mellitus_type_1

It's an auto immune disorder, my white blood cells destroyed the insulin producing cells in my pancreas because they accidentally identified them as a threat to my body.

Type 2 is where the body makes insulin but you are basically too poorly and large for that amount of insulin to be enough for you, type 1 is a different thing... it's pretty much a different condition, hate that they share a name, but yeah, I'm not overweight and most certainly not... unhealthy.

One of my friends in primary school had that problem, he would go cataconic if he needed sugar. Bananas and grapes as well as other fruit with high sugar percentages work well. You could also just always carry a Dextro-Energy packet, to be sure. You're not neccissarly dependent on sodas or candy bars to help yourself with that.

I've been diabetic for the majority of my life ;.; although I do appreciate the info I also... know this very well and always have a pack of dextrose pills with me as well, slightly more difficult to eat 47g of dried sugar though in a pinch than a drink of lucozade.

Also a diabetic should never ever eat a candy bar to treat hypoglycemia, those are laced with fats which actually slow down the sugar being absorbed as well as being very unhealthy a way to treat the condition since you are basically taking what you need (sugar) along with a load of fat for no reason, would be like having cough medicine with oil poured in it for a cough :o

Get more people to drink water seems like a fine idea.

Ironically some of the biggest cheerleaders of these types of taxes are the ones who frequent chains like Starbucks the most whose sugary, syrupy drinks put any juice or soda product to shame. They'll force their taxes on the poor who just want to enjoy the occasional can or bottle of Coke, while plunking down $5 for their Unicorn Frappuccino. Just look at the freaking nutrition facts for this thing...

They should put a 100% sales tax on garbage like this. I'm sure their customers won't mind paying their "fair share" one bit.

I thought this website was a parody but it seems to be real...

"Here for a few days only: The flavor-changing, color-changing, totally not-made-up Unicorn Frappuccino. Magical flavors start off sweet and fruity transforming to pleasantly sour. Swirl it to reveal a color-changing spectacle of purple and pink. It's finished with whipped cream-sprinkled pink and blue fairy powders."

Taxes will do nothing to stop people from buying products. It just hurts consumers and companies over time - just like here in Canada.

Not true. A lot of people have quit smoking because of how expensive it' gotten.

No, they quit because its unhealthy. I know people who still smoke, despite the expense (my father unfortunately) because it is just so hard to quit.

Made a bet with LipeJJ and HylianYoshi that the XB1 will reach 30 million before Wii U reaches 15 million. Loser has to get avatar picked by winner for 6 months (or if I lose, either 6 months avatar control for both Lipe and Hylian, or my patrick avatar comes back forever).
