Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Bold Prediction: SMO will get a 99 on Metacritic! [Update currently a 97!] I Took the "L"

Wouldn't be surprised.....Nintendo games have their own review scales and the media has always been extremely biased towards them

EDGE literally gave Samsus Returns a 6 in the same issue they give Odyssey a 10 in...

Anyways, I think you need to realize it's Nintendo games which made them so big today, not their hardware or love hotels. Super Mario Odyssey is their big flagship holiday game based on one of the biggest IPs in the world, of course they're going to make sure it's a masterpiece.

I guess thats why games like Star Fox Zero, Zelda Triforce Heroes, Wii Music, and Metroid Other M scored in the 90s...oh wait.

This is what people don't get. Nintendo games don't just magically become beloved more than other companies. Their games just appeal to as wide an audience as possible while still being quality games serving that audience.

I didn't get into Nintendo until late 2014, and I didn't play my first Metroid, Zelda, Donkey Kong, etc. until early 2015. There's still so many franchises I've yet to experience like F-Zero, Star Fox, etc. But I still love the games they made. Super Mario 3D World, arguably one of the worst 3D Mario games, was like a 89/100 for me.

That's not out of imaginary bias that popped out of nowhere, it's about quality games that focus on being games first.

I am sure jim sterling will give a 03/100 because of the colour turkis or green, which will bring the perfect score down to a not perfect score.

Or Maybe he will say that he doesnt like a sandcorn. I am sure that crypto nazi (crypto ss uniform) will Rescue the Nintendo haters.

In order for 99 to happen assuming around 100 reviews, the score breakdown would need to be something along the lines of 90 scores of 95 or over (with around 70 perfect), and no scores below 90. So yeah, would be insane if it happened.

In my mind the solution is pretty obvious:

Anyone who studied even a bit of statistics at school would know, that when you're mapping up a graph of results and you have a consistent line of data with a few rare outliers, you tend to just ignore the outliers since they're assumed to be affected by external factors.

It's not that you just ignore any score under 90 because we've already assumed the game at least deserves that.

But when you have a case of 101 reviewers giving the game a score of no less than 90 (the majority being 100), one reviewer giving 84, and then three other reviewers giving 70, 60 and 60; you would just exclude the last three results from the aggregated score, as they're so far off the margin they're considered anomalies and unrepresentative of the actual reults.

This is why I put the onus on Metacritic moreso than the individual reviewers, since there will always be someone to abuse the system if it's available to do so.

P.S. In reality, the difference between 97 and 98 on Metacritic isn't important. Just seems like an easy fix that could save people a lot of trouble.

Nah. Too many attention whores through the internets.
