Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Prediction: Mario Kart 9 won't release until a decade or more after MK8

I cannot wait for the next Mario kart been playing the same maps since 2014... it’s starting to get old lol, would be nice if they at least add more DLC maps. That would be nice to the fans that supported them on Wii U lol

Anyway, this is one of those predictions that takes into account data, niche, and business motivation for releasing MK9 on current gen Switch.

Considering Nintendo hasn't said anything recently, even if they did have MK9 in development, it's possible they shelved the project. This COULD have been what Retro was working on before, or at least developing some content for.

Naw, even if the project got shelved, which I don't believe, Retro wouldn't have been working on it.  And it would have been too early in development for them to be pulled into helping on a couple tracks.

MK8D is like 16 million by now in 2 years so I think Nintendo will wait until it reaches MKWii's 30 million before considering a (useless) sequel

As of March 31, 2019...

16.69 mil for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

8.44 mil for Mario Kart 8

That's 25.13 million units.

Both versions are the best-selling title on their respective console. Nintendo really should release Mario Kart 9 by 2022 or sooner. It would sell for sure, especially if it comes out when there aren't many other big games.

So many people think you can't add much more to the series. Give me some new courses (Super Mario Odyssey, hello), new characters, new items, Double Dash mechanic, missions, and I'm all set. You do all those things and market the heck out of the game and it sells 10 million at least.

Then 1-3 years into the Switch's successor release Mario Kart 10.

Lifetime Sales Predictions

PS4: 122 mil (was 100 million) Xbox One: 55 mil (was 50 mil) Switch: 79 million

3DS: 77 mil (was 73 million)

I don't think it's a question of whether it would sell.  Obviously it would.  I think people are just looking at Deluxe and realizing that Nintendo could just ride it out and sell 5 million+ copies every single year.  Obviously, a new Mario Kart game would sell more, but Nintendo is going to want to launch their next console strong.  Arguably, there would be no title that would kick-start the system faster than Mario Kart.  If it's the first Mario Kart in almost 10 years, so much the better.

The fact that the (possible) best Nintendo console in its entire history does not have its own Mario Kart is quite sad and disappointing. It strikes me that they have not even announced a DLC. Something they have to do, I do not think they're going to leave this game as a simple port.

I had the Wii U with its respective Mario Kart 8. Now I have Switch and I have no plans to buy Mario Kart 8 deluxe unless they announce a DLC. I have to admit that I have been tempted because I love the character of the Inkling Girl but I will wait.

I'm positive Mario Kart 9 will release on Switch. Once the Smash hype dies down next year, Nintendo will need a new big game to sell online subscriptions.
