Forums - General Discussion - Is anyone tired of the nostalgia hype of recent years

Tbh things only got less creative since the 1990's so i completely disagree. I think nostalgia is a thing because modern stuff is rehashed, tired and devoid of originality.
Actually the previous decades were alot more easy going, colorful and quite honestly happy. Nowadays everything has to be dark, gritty and dramatic. The vibes it gives you are very different. I do miss the days when things were just silly and light hearted. It put a smile in your face.

With that said... i don't care about clothing fashion. :P That was actually a general comment.

I don't remember ever seeing anyone wear that thing in the first picture though.

I don't mind it as it pertains to clothing or music but I truly despise it when it comes to video games. I'm so sick of pixel-art junk that's being pushed in the indy market. I don't mind games feeling old school. In fact I loved games like that. But to make them look old school makes no sense. That has no bearing on the game whatsoever. I guess that sort of works both ways when I think of it. Still...

PC GAMING: BEST GAMES. WORST CONTROLS

A mouse & keyboard are made for sending email and typing internet badassery. Not for playing video games!!!

Nostalgia hype has always existed. You're just old enough for it to cater to you now.

This covers it entirely.

People get older. They realise that being an adult is nowhere near as good as they thought it would be and that all the stuff their parents told them about "these are the best days of your life!", which sounded absurd at the time, was actually true. They wish they were carefree kids again and they buy things that remind them of their childhood. Every generation does this.

OP, if you think nostalgia is a new fad then you're either very, very young, or you haven't been paying much attention. The only remotely novel thing about the current wave of nostalgia is that adults are now having a lot of nostalgia about video games.

This is always the generic answer but it's factually wrong. What I had in the 90s wasn't a product of the 70s, they were a product of their time, Ninja Turtles, Dragon Ball, Karate Kid, Robocop, Power Rangers etc are a product of their time, suddenly they are back. I wasn't growing up with the nostalgia people had for the 70s. Yes duh nostalgia always existed, but not to this extend. Not to the extend of having every memorable IP whether it's games, movies or fashion of the last 3 decades being recycled. The internet made it so easy to go back to the past, and influencers on social media. Have 1 celebrity post about some old thing to her millions of followers on Insta, and it's suddenly "in". This much hype for the old, the retro didn't exist 10 years ago. If you were old enough back then to be nostalgia tripping, say 20 something and now 30 something, you should see the difference. It's a problem people today don't see but will be visible in a few decades time. The 2010s in terms of originality in entertainment will be unmemorable asf. People won't have anything to reboot from this decade in the future, because it's all reboots of the old.

You must have been asleep when bell bottoms made a comeback in the 90s.  Or when everyone started wearing those John Lennon glasses in the 90s.

The internet is guilty for all this crap, everything of the past is so easily accessible, people refuse to move on, it's bad for creativity. I think Google should censor everything older than 10 years. JUST DO IT.

Hmm, almost all of my favourite games are older than 10 years, so I definitely wouldn't want that!

I love Paris Hilton. So much better than there Kardashian mess. I welcome that comeback.

It depends on subjects. When we look at movies I'm very tired of the non-originality from Hollywood. It seems like they basically ran out of ideas. Most blockbuster movies are either comic book films or remakes. I wish there were more movies that actually set the focus on story instead of shiny effects. Movies like The Revenant, for example. Great story!

I don't give two fucks about fashion. I rather despise people that follow sudden trends popping up and try to be cool when they blend together with everyone else. I just wear suits at work because I like them and in my free time I'm the jeans and shirt guy.

In music, though, I really enjoy a certain 80s vibe at the moment.

Now gaming is where nostalgia hits me the hardest! Out of 7 games I own on the Switch 5 are hardcore oldschool stuff (USFII, Bomberman, Blaster Master Zero, Wonder Boy and Puyo Puyo x Tetris). I am really really really looking forward to Sonic Mania and Project Octopath Traveler next. And on top of that I enjoy the NES classic sooo much! Actually it is a very happy time for me right now as a gamer and I wish this trend continues for a while.

There was always some stuff which came back. Sure, you didn't get so much in the 80's what was already beloved in the 40's because in the 40's or before, there was not much you could own and which could even have a comeback (except for something like furniture or stuff which is so bad that it's just not comeback worthy)

Humans developed more and more different stuff you could own especially for your leisure time and with that, there will be more and more which could have a revival but it's not a crazy new trend or something.

If the music industry goes back to the quality of the 90's and 00's i have no problem with that.

You see I live in a mostly farming state. I live in a town of 50,000 people, but whenever we went traveling for high school events, these small towns are like their own little time capsules. One town we went to everyone was wearing 90's clothing and had 80's hairdos with 2000's tech. It felt like the town was stuck in it own little time paradox. I can't say I'm getting sick of it because personally being in so many small towns around me, I've grown accustom to it.
