"Of recent years."

Nostalgia hype has always existed. You're just old enough for it to cater to you now.

This covers it entirely.

People get older. They realise that being an adult is nowhere near as good as they thought it would be and that all the stuff their parents told them about "these are the best days of your life!", which sounded absurd at the time, was actually true. They wish they were carefree kids again and they buy things that remind them of their childhood. Every generation does this.

OP, if you think nostalgia is a new fad then you're either very, very young, or you haven't been paying much attention. The only remotely novel thing about the current wave of nostalgia is that adults are now having a lot of nostalgia about video games.

This is always the generic answer but it's factually wrong. What I had in the 90s wasn't a product of the 70s, they were a product of their time, Ninja Turtles, Dragon Ball, Karate Kid, Robocop, Power Rangers etc are a product of their time, suddenly they are back. I wasn't growing up with the nostalgia people had for the 70s. Yes duh nostalgia always existed, but not to this extend. Not to the extend of having every memorable IP whether it's games, movies or fashion of the last 3 decades being recycled. The internet made it so easy to go back to the past, and influencers on social media. Have 1 celebrity post about some old thing to her millions of followers on Insta, and it's suddenly "in". This much hype for the old, the retro didn't exist 10 years ago. If you were old enough back then to be nostalgia tripping, say 20 something and now 30 something, you should see the difference. It's a problem people today don't see but will be visible in a few decades time. The 2010s in terms of originality in entertainment will be unmemorable asf. People won't have anything to reboot from this decade in the future, because it's all reboots of the old.
