Forums - Gaming Discussion - If the Scorpio is too powerful for $399, what does that mean for PS5?

PS5 rumored 2019 with the launch of GTA VI.
Hope it's true, what's MS going to do? Release another after just two years.

How is it too powerful for $399? An overclocked Jaguar, overclocked RX480 thats also in the PS4 Pro, launching a whole year later than it. The advanced cooling design they talk about has been in the original PS4 since 2013 when the Xbone had just a giant pc style cooler over the apu. It's why the PS4 was smaller and more powerful and had the psu in the system. Yet in 2017 it's revolutionary for the Scorpio.

This thing will be $399 or less.

I like your thinking!

You're more into the technical side of this, $399 seems possible. I'm feeling like $499 can happen given its such a big upgrade. Also most people will buy the X1 S regardless.

But hey, I hope you're right.

I know people do love that 399 price tag, so for ps5 sony could come out with 2 sku one for 399 with every performance they can squeeze at that price and another one more powerful for 499 or 599. I wouldn't mind not having to wait for a middle gen update and buy it at launch, this way i wouldn't need to buy the launch model and then the mid gen upgrade. And yes, by late 2019 (my estimate) the tech will permit a 399 console that will be twice as powerful as scorpio. Also things are changing, in 2012 a 500 dollars graphics card, despite being the fastest was described as prohibited and now we have 800 dollars graphics cards and everyone is acting like is normal. Maybe that can transverse to the console and we can quit this eternal seek for that 399 just to complain after about resolution and framerate...

The reason people think it's $499 is because MS keeps going on and on about it being a premium product for a premium price, even comparing it to the Elite controller. I believe they even hinted at it being more expensive than the Pro. It doesn't help that DF also believes it'll be $499.

As for PS5, we probably have ~2 1/2 years before it launches. That plenty of time for Ryzen and Vega to drop in price to put into a PS5 at $399. Even if Sony has to sell it at a slight loss.

Don't worry, Scorpio will be as outdated as the PS4 Pro was when it released.

Spoiler:PS5 will be outdated upon its release too :)

I think generations are almost nearing their demise. To be honest, unless you want hundred and twenty FPS and RED EPIC graphics, you will be alright with the Pro...

If PS5 aims for 2019, I think the logical thing to for MS to do is aim for 2020 with a more powerful box.

If PS5 is only two years away from Scropio, I'm not sure it will be massive power disparity. If it isn't then maybe MS can wait until 2021.

Scorpio will certainly have the price advantage over PS5.

Yes. It will be significantly more powerful that the scorpio. Even when hitting th $399 price point.

And its all about the timing.

TLDR: Being more powerful has more to do with timing than to do with the amount of money spent. And because of how technology systems shift and the fact that every massive computing jump is based on the availability of a new manufacturing process and also that these new fab processes comes around once every 3-4yrs now; you can literally predict what will be what at the time you are trying to do something.

Think of it this way, if the Scorpio releases at the end of this year and by January 2018 there is some sort of breakthrough and 7nm fabrication is available and sony decides to make a PS5 next year.... with a target price of $400 sony would be able to make a machine thats around 4-5 times more powerful than the Scorpio. Crazy isn't it?

And of course, don't forget that sony's expertise is in hardware manufacturing and engineering. Just look at the launch PS4 and launch XB1. And remember that the launch XB1 stll came with an external PSU.

System specs are meaningless without context. Scorpio/Pro are simply X1/PS4 with higher resolution and occasionally framerate.

I made the point before that Scorpio is achieving 4K with room to spare for graphics.

So saying its resolution and performance is innaccurate, some games have graphical improvments.

Depends on the hardware they choose to go with. In 3 years from now a 10 TF console could like still come in at $399.

Certainly possible, but lets remember 3 years later and all Sony came up with was... a faster CPU and about 2.4 TF. Which is currently sitting at $399.

Which would be good enough to do current graphics at 4K/60 fps with room to spare. So I would hope they achieve atleast that.

They did that for compatibility reasons and also probably to profit a bit more from this "premium" model since the base model is always under pressure for a low price tag. Scorpio on the other hand had bigger changes (major ones were memory and gpu, that also needed premium cooling) so that will translate into a bigger price tag or a loss per console sale, all we have to see is if MS will take that hit or hand it to their customers.

The ps5 will be the maximum power Sony can get for €399 or €449. It will be a lot more powerful than the ps4 was at launch. Could be anything from 3-4 years from now.
