I think part of the explanation could be franchise fatigue as well, we still have series that stem from the PS2 and PS1 days going on and the 8th gen hasn't exactly showed earth-shattering improvements in gameplay, AI, writing or overall design.
New blood is needed, new breakout IP's that can carry the industry. Call of Duty, Assassin's Creed, FIFA, Madden, GTA, Final Fantasy, Metal Gear, Resident Evil, Elder Scrolls series, Far Cry etc., they're still go-to games for the PS and Xbox after all this time. Plus, it's getting really boring for older nerds like ourselves. Luckily, some smaller studios have been doing amazing things lately and shown the big boys how to do it, but this also coincides with these big boys really dropping the ball as of late (Bioware being the latest in the line of fire).
PS: Nintendo still relying pretty much on the same handful of 1st party franchises to move their hardware isn't terribly exciting to me either...
