Sunset Overdrive was one of the surprise success stories of the early Xbox One era, winning over critics with its irreverent attitude and fast-paced gameplay. For a console that lacks defining first-party games beyond the Halo, Gears of War, and Forza franchises, the Insomniac Games title seemed like a natural candidate to receive a sequel. But more than two years removed from its launch, the franchise is still dormant.

We asked Insomniac president Ted Price why there has been no movement on a sequel, and he replied, "You'd have to ask Microsoft." But with or without Microsoft's participation, Sunset Overdrive may grind again.

"We are passionate about that franchise, and we own it, so you may see more Sunset in the future from us," Price said. "No promises, and no timeline to speak of, but it is something that represents our willingness to create unexpected experiences."

Right now, Insomniac is currently working on the PS4-exclusive Spider-Man and its VR title The Unspoken, which has a full season of content planned. The studio just came off its busiest year to date, shipping Ratchet & Clank, Song of the Deep, Edge of Nowhere, Feral Rites, and The Unspoken all in 2016.

Love the game. Kinda sad that its still the best (non Forza) exclusive MS has to offer.

They should do a multiplat sequel. I bet it would sell well on the PS4.

Now that I remember Sony doesn't have a direct response to CrackDown. Edit: Not like anyone is asking for it. But it could be a nice addition.

I'm surpirsed this great game struggled to sell, and it was not Microsoft's fault, they did a great job as a publisher and advertised the game properly.

They even discounted this title in several ocassions and yet the XBox fan base didn't support it. And here we are wondering why Microsoft cancels games.

Would be nice to have a multiplat sequel.

Why would they need a response for an unprooven, mediocre franchise. As much potential the first game had, the second entry pretty much wiped it out and the third title seems to be vaporware at the moment. WOuldent be surprised if MS decides not to release it.

To me it sounds like If Microsoft asked them to do another (and funded it of course) they'd make one for them, and it'd be exclusive again obviously, hence the ask microsoft. If they say yes, then Insomniac is on board.

But in the event Microsoft doesn't ask them to do another one then eventually they'll probably make another one regardless, and this one would be multi-platform, or potentially exclusive to another platform if someone else got onboard.

Basically it seems like Insomniac want to do another one eventually but they also think Microsoft isn't that kean on carrying on their previous arrangement, so they may have to strike out on their own or work something else out if they want to make a sequel.

Good. I bought SO the day it came out and it's still my go to when I don't feel like playing anything but I want to play something. Would LOVE to see it return.

They made a really successful ratchet and clank reboot since. Spiderman next. I can see a ratchet 2 reboot next and maybe sunset overdrive multiplatform after.

If it all happened like that I'd like to see a ratchet 3 reboot or Spiderman 2. Insomniac has many options though, which is good.

It's not like the game had any iconic characters. They could release "Moonlight Turbo Drive" and take 90% of the stuff in So and still have a great game with the original's fun spirit.
