Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Nintendo Switch Will Not Support a Web Browser at launch

Who uses internet browsers in consoles? Why would anyone do that? And it's obvious they didn't want to have an internet browser to avoid the same exploits that allowed piracy on the 3DS and Wii U. Probably the same reason they don't want Netflix and other apps. It makes sense and in a world where everybody has a smartphone, it's hardly something to be upset with.

You won't need a browser to log into public Wi-Fi. A simple Wi-Fi log in app is all that is needed. Takes 5 minutes to code up. A web browser is largely a presentation or display application for the web. It's not needed to transmit and receive network information.

I'm not sure you understand how some Public/Shared Wi-Fi systems work. You have to sign into your account through a web-portal, and occasionally tick this, tick that etc.

There won't be an application on the Switch that lets you select your account type, login to BT, or purchase access to BT Wi-FI. Sure you could create an application to access these portals, but then it'd essentially just be a browser that's locked to specific pages, so what's the point?

Whatever the case, Nintendo wants to sell digital games. They want to sell online  subscriptions. That requires internet. They'll do something to make it easy as soon as possible.

Again, you do not need a web browser to obtain or transmit web content.   There are millions of applications that do that and they aren't browsers.  Many of them contain elements of a browser without fully being one.   Your email client can display HTML, right?  Is it a browser?

Regardless, an app of this nature will almost certainly not be included, anyone requiring to login via a webportal to access the internet will have to wait until a browser is added.

Seriously Nintendo, you had the best browser of the 3 8th gen consoles -_-

I know right? All they had to do was port the Wii u browser and still have the best of the three

...And by porting the browser they would have ported an already exploited product and make piracy very easy.

haha I don't mean like that. I mean they could easily use the assets available to make the browser not just copy paste it

Come on, who seriously is using a console to browse the web these days. By this I don't mean a web browser would hurt, but it's pretty meaningless if it has one or doesn't have.

I keep seeing this. The answer is ME.

I have a TV (with a web browser app) with a PC with wireless keyboard connected to it, a $700 smart phone, a $300 tablet, and every 7th and 8th gen console. The WiiU browser is still my most used--but it's starting to suck. It's having trouble loading certain pages, nowadays. PS4 and XB1 browsers are pretty capable but clunky to use.

I was REALLY looking forward to Nintendo's version. And it will have one eventually. Even back in the Wii days, I used it way more than PS3's (and Xbox 360 didn't even have one until until the gen as almost over).

If you're not using your TV for the browser, the tablet itself is pretty useless, as you already have similar devices to browse the web. If you have it on the TV, it's going to be clunky to use anyway because you're not using the touch screen.

Nintendo games sell only on Nintendo system.

This does suck for those who need a web browser. But I suppose you could use bluetooth tethering and enter the internet via smartphone. I havn't tried that out, but theoritically it should work.

That's a non issue. The Joy-Con is said to have IR pointer capabilities, just like the Wiimote.
