Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Will the Switch outsell the PS4 in Japan? And what effect would this have?

Will the Switch outsell the PS4 in Japan?

In Japan, Yes! 357 78.46%

In Japan, No! 98 21.54%

Total:455

Definitely, unless Nintendo really screws things up over the next few year. The 3DS won't be supported after 2017 and this should be the Vita's last viable year with sales down from last year. So development from Nintendo and third parties will soon shift to the Switch. Additionally, Nintendo isn't just going to let the Switch die. They'll push it aggressively just like they did with the 3DS when it didn't sell well at first.

Probably within its first year lol

To be honest I wouldn't be surprised either after finding out Japan's 3DS sales are over 20 million compared to not even 4 million for the PS4. I knew home console gaming wasn't doing great in Japan but I didn't know it was by that much. The Nintendo Switch could live on Japan's sales alone at this point.

I don't think the Switch will do 20 million,  probably around 15 million.  The PS4 between 8-10 at best.

If there's two things the Japanese love when it comes to video gaming, it's Nintendo and handhelds, so a Nintendo console/handheld hybrid is going to be the ultimate thing for them. I think the Switch will dominate Japan but I just think it'll struggle a lot out of Japan.

PS4 is past 4 M using MediaCreate numbers, it currently sits at 4.2 M, while in the same time frame the 3DS was sitting at 14.6 M. The first 3 years of the 3DS were great, however sales slowed down quite a bit afterwards, about 7 M in the next 4 years. While that's not great for the 3DS, it's rather unlikely that the PS4 will be able to hit 7 million LTD by the end of this year.

Unless the Switch starts selling like the PS Vita when it comes out then it's extremely unlikely that it won't outsell the PS4. If the Switch does well then it should be able to outsell Wii U WW sales with Japan alone.

Yes in Japan and globally too.

It will have the effect of making me very happy.

Nov 2016 - NES outsells PS1 (JP)

Don't Play Stationary 4 ever. Switch!

Easily, and most likely will outsell Vita too.

I would be very surprise if this happens. PS4 has such a gigantic lead and has been producing quality JRPGs. The Switch just doesn't have the software and if the rumors of it only lasting 2.5 hours of battery life.....thats pretty useless.

"In video game terms, RPGs are games that involve a form of separate battles taking place with a specialized battle system and the use of a system that increases your power through a form of points.

Sure, what you say is the definition, but the connotation of RPGs is what they are in video games." - dtewi
