Forums - Nintendo Discussion - What level of advertisement do you expect for Splatoon 2 ?

One of the most striking things to me to have happened during Wii U's lifetime is Nintendo's choice to advertise Splatoon, a low-medium budget title, as much as they advertised Mario Kart 8, the flagship title of the Wii U and, incredibly, it paid off. Of course Splatoon's success isn't only because of the ads, a key role in its great sales was the Splatoon Global Testfire which gave everyone the opportunity to try the game and really made the hype for the game skyrocket.

So now we have the sequel to the  surprise success, the budget for the game HAS TO BE more substantial, the development has been longer and there's a big fanbase for the game an here I am questioning: what level of advertisement will Splatoon 2 get ? Will it be advertised even more than Splatoon or will Nintendo spend less expecting the game to sell well enough by its own ? Also do you expect a new Global Testfire to occur in the months leading to the launch of the game ?

I hope they give it the advertisement this game deserves, Splatoon has quickly shot its self right up there with other Nintendo franchises and the more people who play this game the better. To me Splatoon is a system seller.

I don't think they will advertise it as much in the West, something slightly smaller in scope. People here already know what Splatoon is. In Japan, however, it will really get a massive push. It's probably a bigger system seller there than Mario and Zelda. Combined.

You know it deserves the GOTY.

I think you overestimate how much people in the west know about Splatoon. And if Splatoon is bigger in Japan, why would they push it less here? Wouldn't they want it to be bigger here?

It will be their first original big release on Switch (Arms is an unknown here). I think it will get a sizable push on that basis alone. Nintendo will also need this game to be a hit in order to justify charging for online play. The game will be heavily advertised and supported pre and post launch.

Well, Splatoon was a huge succes in the West, no doubt, but it was massive in Japan. Specially considering it was on a home console with limited appeal there. A handheld Splatoon is going to be massive, and Nintendo knows it. No way they are going to lose the oportunity to push both the game and the console there. As for the West, I just doubt they are going to push it as much as they did. They were betting a lot with Splatoon back then, but now it's a safe bet.

Nah I don't think so.

Splatoon has been a massive success, but outside of the people who did get to play it, it actually isn't all that mainstream. I think Nintendo should (and is going to) push Splatoon 2 very hard, because it can do much better than what it has so far - I think for a lot of people, this game will be their introduction to the franchise, and from then on it can only take off even more than it has.

I agree. It's a very TF vs TF2 situation.
