Forums - Gaming Discussion - Nintendo Switch’s Bundled Joy-Con Grip Won’t Charge the Controllers

I dunno man. There are some legit problems with Switch but I don't get this one. The system comes with two controllers and with a perfectly acceptable way to charge them. I would just plug it in overnight.

All I can honestly say (or ask) is this:

If this is so irrelevant, why is nintendo making a version of the grip and selling it for $30 that enables this very thing I am talking about here?

Now if this accessory came like say 6-8 months after the console launched and due to an outcry by gamers, I would even understand it as it being some sort of oversight on their part.

But the console is not even out yet and they already have a grip that allows you charge and game at the same time? But not the grip that comes with the console.... and that doesn't seem fishy to you guys at all?

Funniest part is this, adding a USB pasthrough for charging in the grip wouldn't have cost them more than a $1/$2 at best.

Realistically this probably won't affect me, considering that hooking the joycons up to the switch when not in use is the best way to not lose them.

But all grips should charge joycons just as a matter of convenience. And also to not confuse customers who will inevitably end up complaining that their joycon grip chargers are broken.

I get that it's an added convenience but console manufacturers usually charge extra for that stuff:

Nintendo is selling additional Joy-con grips because they are selling additional Joy-cons. The Joy-cons that come with the console can be charged with the console. Additional Joy-cons could not be charged at the same time, hence why the separately available Joy-con grip has the ability to charge Joy-cons.

Wow..... they've got you good havent they?

So nintendo did this cause they were being very thoughtful?

How about this? make the bloody grip that comes with the console support USB pass through so you can charge your joycons + be able to play on the big scren (TV) while charging the joycons AND that way if you buy a second pair of joycons you can slide that into the console thats in the dock.

Less convoluted approach and more functional. And look!!!! Took me all of 1 min to think of that.

Those are all very very very very diiferent things.

I am not talking about an accessory here. Like a remote control, or earphones, VR headset, or another controller...... I am talking about a damn USB port on something that comes in the box already.

Yes, you don't even need to buy an extra grip. You simply buy two extra Joy-cons and slide them on the dock. When the Joy-cons you have on the grip run out of juice, you simply swap them with the ones of the dock.

Ok cool, so what of if i dont want an extra joycon and i want to/or my set up is such that i have to plug in my controllers while still playing on the big screen....like say, I have a projector and my appliances are very far away like different room  or I have a 6 yr old that i dont want holding the tablet for ferar that he may damage it and would rather that he only uses the grip?

You keep skirting the issue, if you have to come up with so many alternative ways to do an otherwise very simple thing? Then you know something is wrong.

Just lock if anyone has made the thread

It looks like the Joycon Grip that bundled on the Switch (299USD prices) will not able to charge the Joycon. Apparently they are different entities. They have one with charging capabilities but it's not the one that included in the Switch, both have different name.

Joycon batteries life will take around  20 hours more or less.

What if the Switch is charging using the USb, not the dock. Does that charge the Joycons?

Pocky Lover Boy!

A bit odd but it will charge when attached the console itself so it should be fine

I am just making an issue more complicated than it needs to be, playing along with you.

Play Switch, end session, pull off Joy-cons from grip, slide Joy-cons on the Switch console. That's the simple way.

No you aren't you are ignoring a specific usage case scenario simply because it won't affect someone like you. You are also ignoring a blatant design flaw (in truth i can't even call it a design flaw cause they did this on purpose which is why they have a version of the grip they sell that supports what I am asking for; which makes this worse)

If you can't dispute what is being said, its really a messed up discussion tactic to instead resort to dismissing it.

Here are the facts..... if you buy the switch, as is... its impossible to charge the joycons and play on you TV at the same time. If you want to be able to do that for whatever your reason then you will have to spend another $30 in addition to the purchase of your switch. Something that if you do will make something that comes with your switch completely redundant (the USB portless grip)

Take me for instance, I have a projector. And all my appliances are basically in a cabinet in another room. I could try explaing how this setup works for my PS4, but no need for that. I'll just say for someone like me; if nintendo doesn't allow me download all my games? No buy. If i do buy, then I must spend another $30 just to be able to charge my controllers without having to go to the console.

Now all that, and this whole thread could have been avoided if nintendo had just thought to put a USB port on the joycon grip........ actually, they did think about it. They chose to sell that thought seperately.

I don't get the problem... It lasts more than 20 hours... Just put the joycons back on the Switch tablet after you're done gaming... It will never run out of battery life unless you have gaming sessions that last over 20 hours...
