When I go to the store and the Blu-ray costs $32 while the DVD is $20 I go 'eh the DVD is good enough'

what store are you going to where anything cost that much?

Most people saying those numbers can't be from teh U.S.

Blu Rays are at most $20. 4k are at most $30.

And those are at the highest unsale price you will ever find them. Even brand new. And most stores also have movies like $5 cheaper opening week.

Of the uncompressed 4K movies I have they average 50+ Mbps. I have some files that are 100Mbps average. I know that Netflix recommends a 25mbps for 4k HDR streaming. That is a huge quality difference. Don't get me wrong, 4K HDR streaming looks amazing, but once you see an actual UHD clip uncompressed, it's just in another league.

Uncompressed chroma subsampled 4K video at 24fps is 1.22 Terrabyter per hour.
At 100mbps you're looking at 44 Gigabyte per hour.
Netflix 4K HDR is 18mbps or 7.9 Gigabyte per hour.
Netflix 4K standard is 15mbps or 5.5 Gigabyte per hour.

I highly doubt you have seen uncompressed 4K video. Let alone 4:4:4 video, not color compressed, as the first step is to reduce color resolution to 1920x1080 by chroma subsampling. 2.44Tb per hour for 10 bit 24fps full color 3840x2160 video, that's 712 MB/s. SATA 3 maxes out at 600 MB/s. It's not possible!

You are correct. It is 4:2:0 10 bit using HEVC, so yes, there is chroma subsampling.

I could go to Amazon right now and find plenty of Blurays over $20. It isn't exactly difficult. Just check out the new release category. The fact that you mostly buy blurays a few months to a year or more after release doesn't mean they came to the store priced sub-$20 on release day.

you dont know when i buy blurays so lets not assume. i buy new movie releases often. Xmen apocalypse is a fairly recent movie and I payed 20 bucks for that. And that was from Target. Amazon is its own beast and even then they have that same movie for 20. To be clear I am talking single movies, not something like a Game of Thrones box set, which is expensive

Does anybody know an approx. file size of a 4K video and how much bandwidth it takes to stream?

I've read that streaming an HD episode on Netflix takes around double the size of bandwidth than it would to just "download" the episode.

As convenient as streaming is, there are many countries that doesn't have the luxury of having a large/unlimited bandwidth at an affordable price.

https://www.digitalfoundry.net/2016-11-07-free-sample-video-rise-of-the-tomb-raider-ps4-pro-vs-titan-x-pascal

This file from Digtalfoundry is 60hz, 2mins long and is 800MB in size.

File size is obviously linked strongly to quality.

Streaming files like these are quite difficult, now what happens when we get to VR movies at 4K+.

We have along way to progress.

You would be lying. 99% of blu ray on Amazon.com are $19.99 or less, and that is at full price. The only movies I see that that are higher are collections, tv sets, and quite a few disney movies.

And I'm just looking at the first few pages where it is new releases.

Maybe he's checking Amazon.ca :p
It is 24.96 and 34.99 here for blu-ray and 4K respectively. Actually blu-ray is going up further, I want the Girl who leapt through time, yet it's sitting steady at 28.99. Too much. (New releases on DVD are 19.88 here) So basically 20,25,35 for new releases. 3D is still available too at the 30 slot.

But with the crappy exchange rate, blu-ray is actually cheaper here, $18.79 for new releases, $26.34 for 4K. Too bad it doesn't feel that way. Did not get a 30% salary raise in the past 2 years.

Wow, this was sure a difficult hunt:

https://www.amazon.com/Suicide-Extended-Blu-ray-Digital-UltraViolet/dp/B01INUND9I/ref=sr_1_1?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1481055214&sr=1-1

https://www.amazon.com/Star-Wars-Awakens-Blu-ray-Digital/dp/B018FK66TU/ref=lp_2901953011_1_14?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1481055271&sr=1-14

https://www.amazon.com/Petes-Dragon-DVD-Digital-Blu-ray/dp/B01I0RFN38/ref=lp_2901953011_1_12?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1481055271&sr=1-12

https://www.amazon.com/Beauty-Beast-Anniversary-DIGITAL-Blu-ray/dp/B01G4N5Q28/ref=lp_2901953011_1_10?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1481055271&sr=1-10

And that was just with about a 30 second search. Said search also revealed plenty of blurays over $20 regularly that are just temporarily on sale because of the holiday sales. Don't mistake slashed sale prices for the regular price. If there is a crossed out price visible, it means that is the regular price. It's like I picked up four Studio Ghibli blurays for under $60 total because of sales. You can guarantee they'll shoot back up to around $25 - $30 a piece by the time the sales die down in early January at the latest.  You can also find that most movies for pre-order in particular are set at around $25 new up to $30 or more depending on how versions are being bundled into the stock bluray package.

I know being wrong is hard, but when you are blatantly incorrect or are leaning on sale prices as proof of your everyday experience, maybe you should just consider calling it quits.

out of those four movies two are not new and are rare. Star Wars and Beauty and the Beast are Disney movies which was established to be more expensive.

Suicide Squad is the only new one and even then thats a special edition.
