Forums - Sony Discussion - PlayStation VR is Being Sold at a Profit, Says Sony

Good for them i guess. I would be more motivated at a $100-$150 less or if PS4 Pro offers higher fidelity from the headset.

Its really hard to settle for blurry image resembling last gen IQ, especially after enjoying current games on a 4K screen. Makes the novelty tougher to justify knowing the HMD cinema feature is a such downgrade.

good for sony. i imagine the profits are small but that's much better than loss-lead.

Yes, but is it actually being sold?

its easy if you look at Amazon, its sold out except for Scalpers who are offering those for over 400

Any actual numbers?

That is great news. Hopefully the profits will go towards getting as much software as possible, and developing PSVR 2. I would love to see PS4 Pro 2 and PSVR 2 in 2018. Hopefully at that point they can have PS4 = $200, Pro = $300, Pro 2 = $400, and PSVR = $200, PSVR 2 = $400. If they can get the entry point for PSVR as it stands down to $400 for a PS4 + PSVR by holiday 2018, then they will be in great shape. Offering a 1440p PSVR 2 and a Pro 2 that can deliver VR in full 1440p per eye would be key to keeping the core VR market on PlayStation, and not bleeding marketshare to Vive and Rift.

Putting the profits into bringing more software to that platform will be just as important as making sure they keep delivering hardware that keeps them competitive. They need to dish out to help development of games, movies, production software, and education software, ecspecially early on. PSVR will need software beyond gaming and entertainment if they hope to have any signifgant presence in VR. I am really looking forward to seeing just how much they do with Dreams from Media Molicule, since that software was said to allow you to create assests, and delevope games, that could be published via Unity for PSVR and other VR hardware.

Definitely seemed a tad overpriced for what you're getting (didn't even include the camera/control in that $400).

I'm guessing with the success of the PS4 they're gambling that they'll be able to move the headset while selling it for more than they usually would, and they're probably right... I'll be getting it myself once I see some worthwhile games.

I believe this. Because it would be cleverer to say that it's sold at a loss.

Well. I wouldn't say overpriced. I heard in a review that the screen is easily the same or higher quality as the rift and the vive due to their use of rgb pixels and that there is no screendoor effect wich is very noticable in the other headsets.

then we have the confort level wich is obviously higher than on the Rift and Vive.

SOoooo, the graphical difference is obviously due to the PS4 Hardware itself, as its just less powerfull than a highend PC.

THEN we maaaay conclude that the Rift and the Vive are actually overpriced as they are not delivering a better quality in all aspects.

Am I overseeing something?

No wonder it is a crappy VR device, most reviews of more demanding games are not good. If a stunning looking title as DC looks bad in VR I wonder how much potential VR has for Playstation.

Still better than the other options according to Mr Master Race Jim Sterling: http://www.thejimquisition.com/playstation-vr-review/

By the way, the PSVR runs at a faster refresh rate and has a better pixel quality: https://m.reddit.com/r/oculus/comments/4aml42/psvrs_rgb_screen_has_actually_a_higher_subpixel/

Better than the competition at a lower price, looks like the beginning of this generation all over again. ;)

If you discount the competition has a higher resolution, better headtracking, more accurate controllers it is indeed better. It is pretty comfortable though, but is isn't remotely close to the Vive. My TV has a refreshrate of 1200hz but artificial frames don't do much more than being advertisement. According to power unlimited the biggest games magazine in the Benelux especially the lower resolution hurts the headset.
