Forums - Gaming Discussion - Would it make sense for Sony to add an UHD drive in 12 months?

It wouldnt matter. It would just come off as a nice little new addition. Kimda how the 360 didnt launch with a HDMI port and then it mysteriously started appearing in some models aroumd when the PS3 launched.

However, I feel Sony won't even bother. And rather than add a BR drive in the system, they just drop the price of the Neo.

Hell if I were them I would make an external 4K BR drive reader that plugs into the PS4pro via USB. They can easily sell something like that for $100.

Would be great if such an add-on could work on any ps4!

I still have one of these:

Does anyone know if the XBox One recognizes the old hd-dvd add-on. Sadly my 360 broke and my entire hd-dvd collection (10 movies) is now inaccesible. I replaced the good ones with superior blu-ray versions, but might be fun for nostalgia sake to watch Aeon Flux and King Kong again.

It probably could. I only mentioned PS4pro csuse it has HDMI 2.0 but just remembered that movies are usually mastered at 24fps so technically something like that could be made to work on every PS4.

What's funny is that Sony are more likely to do something like that than add it to every PS4. That way they make the people that really want it pay more for it instead.

It's funny tho, Sony making every single PS4 HDR compatible is actually a really great thing and something MS clearly didn't do. Yet here we are talking about movies lol.

There's tons more content digitally, and Sony has their own 4K service which will most likely be on Pro. Why even add UHD drive for what is it now.....45-47 movies? Which only 1-2 were native 4K....with the rest being remastered in 4K

If PS4 Slim and PS4 Pro supported 4K Blurays, perhaps there would be more demand.

I get your point, but Sony also makes over priced 4K Bluray players. Why not put UHD support in the PS4 to create demand for more physical movies?

It just seems really odd the X1 S has UHD support at $299, while both PS4 Slim and Pro lack it.

Except they don't. For some reason Sony has no interest in releasing a 4K UHD players, they only sell upscaling / streaming players. Perhaps they're still hoping the FMP-X10 will catch on, or at least their own streaming service. Sony makes movies too, selling them digitally nets them a lot more than selling a disc.

1. We don't know Scorpio's price. Its not crazy to presume it will be $399.

2. There would be a massive amount of backlash if Sony released a new PS4 with a UHD drive. They need to wait a few years and maybe put it in a PS4 Pro Slim.

3. UHD isn't just a Scorpio selling point, X1 S already has UHD support. Frankly, Sony made a bad call. Both the PS4 Slim and PS4 Pro should have UHD support.

So UHD drive, 6TF gpu, Supposedly better CPU, More ram.... all for $399? the obky way i see them coming in at $399 is if they bite the bullet and sell the console at a loss.

But another way to look at it is this.... if MS could do all that and sell the console at $399 and not at a loss.... how much do you think it woukd be costing Sony at that time to make the PS4pro? What happens if Sony drops the Pro to $299 and the PS4 slim to $199?

I'd say they could possibly add it, but I'm not holding my breath.

With BR on PS3 at least there was an argument that games used BR and some needed more than DVD capacity, so BR wasn't just for playing movies. UHD BR would not be used for games in this generation, part because not needed, part because they must keep keep backwards compatibility with the original PS4/XB1.

If Sony wants to compete with Scorpio I think PS4 Plus Plus with another GPU would be the way to do it, and they have 1 year and know Microsoft's cards...

Huh, based on what I'm seeing you're correct.

Their lack of interest in UHD players is very odd considering they push 4K TVs, PS4 Pro, and media players. Frankly, it seems like X1 S and Scorpio are going to be the most popular physical UHD players.

The add-on works with PCs, but I'd be surprised if it works with XB1.

Don't really see it all that unlikely at all.

1.) UHD drive - Already in the XBox One S, only costs $15 more than a regular Blu-Ray drive, that cost could be as little as $5-$8 difference in a year.

2.) Better CPU - Not terribly hard to have a better CPU that the piece of shit that is the Jaguar. Even mobile phones have better CPUs these days. Again tech scales down in cost, what MS can get in 2017 CPU-wise for the same cost as the Jaguar in 2013 is going to be considerably better.

3.) 6 TFLOP AMD GPU - Well we know the Polaris 11 is a 5.5 TFLOP GPU that's under $250 today. That's cheaper than the equivalent GPUs that the PS4/XB1 used for their time. Again, technology scales costs down big time, this is the reason Sony can offer basically a 2.2x PS4 this year for only $99 more. Add another year and the Polaris 11 is going to be even cheaper.

4.) More RAM - Again, if Sony got 8GB in 2013, I'd assume MS could get a bump on that to say 12GB in 2017. Not a big deal.

Remember too you are basically knocking $100 off the price but not having a super expensive Kinect camera (which is really like several cameras + a processing unit) as well.

I don't really see anything here that would neccesitate a price higher than $399.99. To be honest I think MS could go above 6 TFLOP if they really pushed AMD.

Well they added a UHD drive and boosted the CPU performance of the X1 S and kept it $299. I believe they are willing to sell Scorpio at a small loss.

I don't think Sony is as willing to lose money on hardware, they are market leading anyhow.

No it wouldn't because in way less than 12 months people will have forgotten about this silly feature. Of course it will be brought up just before release of Scorpio but at that point it will matter even less than today.
