Welcome, welcome! And yes, new members should be required to post a few posts before being able to create a thread. I think 50 might be a bit more than what's required to prevent spam bots from creating threads so the number could probably be a bit lower, but I can't really know for sure. It'd be useful if admins/moderators had access to some statistics about this, or if they otherwise knew how many posts spam bots usually manage to post before being banned.
Mods ahoy, maybe watch that a bit in the future so we can determine a proper limit? Obviously the lower the limit, the more it encourages discussion. It's finding the proper balance that's important. And if you've already considered this, please ignore me and feel free to consider me a smartass. :D
