Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Pokemon Was Left Out of The 2016 Olympics Closing Ceremony Due to International Recognition

They probably didn't want to put two Nintendo characters in a 2-3 min clips to have a variety of pop cultural icons.

And yet they included Doraemon and Captain Tsubasa, which are so well known outside of Japan!

The football player Oliver Torres is named after Tsubasa, and a few months ago I was in a bus and a bunch of girls were talking about Doraemon. It's aired everyday in Spain since forever.

Interesting, but I still don't think they are more well-known than Pokemon.

I doubt they are more recognizable than pokemon, but captain tsubasa is pretty big in most latin countries (dragon ball level)

I guess the games being in brazil and in a sports related event, the choice was really well made

Yes, "football countries" usually recognise Tsubasa.

God bless You.

My Total Sales prediction for PS4 by the end of 2021: 110m+

When PS4 will hit 100m consoles sold: Before Christmas 2019

There were three ravens sat on a tree / They were as blacke as they might be / The one of them said to his mate, Where shall we our breakfast take?

Pikachu is likely Nintendo's most-recognized mascot outside of Mario. In fact, I'm sure I saw something somewhere that said just that.

Also: perfect point about Doraemon and Captain Tsubasa. I don't even know who the latter is.

They aren't as well known as Pokemon, but if they wanted to show something that mixes anime and sports Tsubasa is the best choice because he's the most popular. Doraemon has been an ambassador of Tokyo 2020 since 2013 so he had to be there.

Doraemon was broadcasted here in Brazil back in the 90s, for 4 or 5 months. I watched...

My grammar errors are justified by the fact that I am a brazilian living in Brazil. I am also very stupid.

I dunno, Pikachu made a pretty good mascot for the football World Cup in Brazil.

I think using pokémon would have been a good choice, don't get me wrong. I'm just saying that using captain tsubasa is a good one too

Actually japan has so many recognizable characters that it would be hard to pick just 3

Captain Tsubasa is a sports manga/anime so it sort of fits with the Olympic theme

Doraemon is a classic so it makes sense that it's shown as well :p

They probably didn't want to flood with Nintendo IP so left it with Mario, which if compared against each other, I would say Mario is more popular than Pikachu

[3DS] Winter Playtimes [Wii U]

Talking about Brazil, where the ceremony happened, Pokemon is at least as famous as Mario here. The show aired for years straight in open TV channels and is still airing in Cartoon Network. Pikachu is very recognized here. Mario is too, but in mind share Pokemon is a stronger name in Brazil thanks to the show.
I don't know if Doraemon ever got aired here and Tsubasa aired in Cartoon Network. Brazil has a love case with Anime, I would even risk Goku is as popular here as Superman.
