I'd swipe Lost in Translation with The Virgin Suicides, a much better Sofia Coppola movie.

Problem is Virgin Suicides is from 99.

Opps.

For Spielberg films Lincoln, Munich, and The Adventures of Tintin would have been better choices then A.I. and for Ang Lee films Life of Pi would have been a better choice then Brokeback Mountain.

Actually, and now I may be pretentious, but A.I. is an incredible movie and Spielberg's best.

In real life I've never heard anybody like it though.

All the movies I listed have a higher critics meta score then A.I. as far as awards and recogniton go his best movies are Saving Private Ryan, Schindlers List and Lincoln.  A.I. is decent but nowhere near one of his best movies.  Besides the movies I already metioned Jaws, E.T., Jurrasic Park and Amistad I also like better then A.I.  Plus there is a lot of movies that he was involved in as a producer that I like better then A.I.

Please, at least look up the damn word.

Can you honestly say all the 100 movies in the list are "pretentious" and not actually good? All 100 of them?

I haven't watched many of them, I haven't liked many of them, but it's a big list and it is impossible to end up hating all or loving all.

No. Please don't misunderstand.

All the movies are certainly not pretentious. I said the list is pretentious, overall.

These movies are in my opinion very good:

No country for old men
Mad Max: Fury Road
Pan's Labyrinth (this movie is good despite being pretentious and very "cultural critic")
A history of violence
A.I.
Finding Nemo

Inception was okay, Inglorious basterds is okay or even good (but the worst Tarantino movie). 25th Hour had glimpses of good in it but Spike Lee is clearly among the pretentious directors.

This is how the vast majority of people react if you say you think A.I. is Spielberg's best. I'm used to that.

But Saving Private Ryan, Schindlers List, E.T, Jaws, Jurrasic Park are all great movies, I wholeheartedly agree.

Lincoln and Amistad though were sleeping pills. Unfortunately an engaging subject doesn't automatically turn into a good movie.

But A.I. was the only movie that surprised me for being on this list. I would include it in my top 40.

No country for old men I haven't watched
Mad Max: Fury Road I agree
Pan's Labyrinth (this movie is good despite being pretentious and very "cultural critic") A great movie indeed. No idea why you need to label movies beyond good and bad.
A history of violence I haven't watched.
A.I. I agree, I also agree that's better than the list Chris provided.
Finding Nemo ofc

Inception was okay, I agree

Inglorious basterds is okay or even good (but the worst Tarantino movie). I haven't watched, but I do feel there is some sort of critical bias towards anything Tarantino shits, I am SUPER glad Kill Bill hasn't made the list.

25th Hour had glimpses of good in it but Spike Lee is clearly among the pretentious directors. I haven't watched.

So you basically just like to lable things beyond good and bad, it's ok, we're good friends after all.

To label beyond good and bad?

Yes, I mean, it was my first discovery ages ago when I realized the mentality of the cultural critic, that they measure beyond good and bad. So I had to use the same reasoning if I would address this BBC list.

Also, sometimes there are parts of a movie that are good, parts that are bad or at least less good, to the extent that you end up with mixed feelings about it overall, hence my comment for Pan's Labyrinth.

Thank you for the positive comment in the end.

I don't bother with critics, a lot of the movies RT recommends end up being horrible or no where near the greatness the score indicates. Civil war and Guardians of the galaxy are supposed to be near perfect? Give me a break.

I actually gave up on watching movies at one point because I ended up disappointed most of the time. Then a friend of mine recommended a movie called "Closer" and I loved it, and I've been asking him for recommendations ever since.

I, of course, still fall for the hype sometimes and tag along with my friends when they go to the movies. But I never really rely on critics anymore. So yeah, I don't need more labels than "I enjoyed this movie!"

Me too actually. It was a long time ago, but I ended up disappointed so often so I kind of gave it up. Later I learned to take it for what it is.

I missed the new Star Wars at the movies and saw it on cable a couple of days ago. What a superb movie! I loved that it felt just like the first three.

All the movies I metioned have a way higher critics metascore then A.I.  If you go by critics metascore A.I. is not even in Spielbergs top 10.

I wouldn't say Spike Lee is a bad director but he is better in directing documentaries then life action stuff since this is pretty much his best work to date:
