Forums - Gaming Discussion - Eurogamer: Nintendo NX is a portable console with detachable controllers (It also connects to your TV, and runs cartridges)

It won't be like that. Whatever the NX ends up being will be the first time it has ever been done. Nintendo doesn't take ideas from the other hardware makers.

Sarcastic and passive-aggressive posts like this don't add much to the conversation. They just stir up trouble.

@OP: all I want is a moderately powered and modestly priced system that plays the best Nintendo and its partners have to offer. If it doubles as a portable and a home console all the better.

Call it a pre-emptive statement.

As for the rest of your "want" list, from what is circulating around, the NX should be capable of visuals close to those on the XBO. A portable system with this kind of power? You can say "holy crap"!

The plot tickens :).
Now we need a flash announcement of Nintendo. I mean they cannot ignore this, right?

In the wilderness we go alone with our new knowledge and strength.

So you could, for instance, be playing on the NX handheld, say on Pokemon, turn that off, attach the other part of the controller, and start playing Breath of the Wild on the main console?

Because that would be awesome, even if the power of the home console part isn't too appealing.

so nintendo thought it was a smart thing to compete with both the PS4 and XB1, while also trying to compete with the iphone and andriod. all in the same device? super smart.

This sounds very plausable.

It also goes with other rumors that were concerned about the price.

It's probably gonna be pricy, and that is not a good thing. This could work, but would have to be priced on the range of a handheld console. If its not, handheld customers won't get it and thats where the biggest chunk of Nintendo's market is.

I still think it will fail despite all. Because i don't see Nintendo beeing agressive with its pricing. But... if it does get positioned as a handheld console, that is pretty much a monopoly for them. The Vita hardly twitches with life (though it lingers) and the other home consoles wouldn't necessarely be competitiors.

But it also seems to be a home console, so the higher price(more than a handheld normally has) wouldnt be much of an issue for them, assuming that Nintendo dosent screw up in any other sector.

Also on the power side, it could be more powerful than it actually is.It could be optimized to make most of the chip, and if Im not mistaken its also custom made right? Not to say that the OS is from Nintendo, which might improve the overall performance.I mean, I dont understand much about these things, but thats what I believe. All in all, this is still a rumor, so lets all take it with a grain of salt.

My (locked) thread about how difficulty should be a decision for the developers, not the gamers.

I doubt Nintendo cares at all about competing with Sony and MS.

Unexpected news. It's difficult to say how it will perform. But rising popularity of smartphone is a threat which Nintendo needs to be aware of.

they have a better chance to compete with them than competing with iOS and andriod

Hopefully not, because this sounds kind of awful.

Great for kids, but who else is a handheld really enticing for? How many adults spend a huge amount of time on their portables? How many adults really want to play their consoles that much in public? Does the Wii crowd care about this feature? Does it make sense to double down on handheld gaming that hard, at a point where their handheld sales are declining, and cell phones are providing fierce competition?

Don't get me wrong, it's not a bad feature. It's just not worth going with a cartridge format, a developer unfriendly architecture, and specs that are still 5 years behind its competitors. They're once again going to be jacking up the price for a feature that many may not want. And, for the life of me, I can't figure out how they're going to make a comfortable break away controller for this thing.
