Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Game dev: lot of people will be shocked by the NX and I think not in a good way

If he's right, Nintendo really needs to go third party with their larger games and just stick to making smaller games exclusively on handhelds.

What is there to downplay? We have singular statement with no details. There isn't enough information to truly speculate. The statement itself isn't even definitive. This the equivalent of Zergnet click bait.

People are downplaying the fact that a guy with knowledge of the situation, who as a game dev proabably also has a good understanding of what people are expecting, is saying that they might be in for a less than stellar surprise.  You seriously think if the quote read "I think it is going to shock people in the best way possible" people wouldn't be using his history of having insider info as proof of awesomeness and shouting the news from the rooftops?  Come on now, you aren't new here.

I don't see people using this dev as "proof of awesomeness and shouting the news from the rooftops" in this thread:

*something positive is said by dev about the NX*
"OMG I knew it, going to be soo good, Nintendo is back !"

*something negative is said by a dev about the NX*
"Lol who's this guy, that doesn't mean anything"

Absolutely this.

This isnt exclusive to Nintendo, but its the most obvious case.

Really?  Cuz I scrolled down through maybe 15 responses and see the general theme of trust for the dev, one that if I recall correctly has never put one of their hit games on the system.  Yet, a different dev here has a different opinion, with a track record of having solid information and he isn't credible.

You can stick to the semantics of my hyperbole if you want, but your link really just proves my point.

Beat me to it, but yeah.

And supposedly, Fabian Doehla (from CD Projekt) did confirm that he was not joking about devs being excited for NX.  So let's just let these two conflicting rumors cancel each other out.

Didn't a bunch of people say the same about the Wii U?

Yep. And it was true. It's a system that is struggling to make it to 15M, so obviously people were not happy /excited by it.  I see the same thing coming for the NX if all the rumors are accurate.  It'll be Wii 3.0/Wii U 2.0.  Underpowered compared to the current gen, with a gimmicky controller.  It worked once with the Wii (at the start of the gen), but you would think Nintendo would have learned their lesson with the Wii U.

A little bit of cautious optimism from a few forum members doesn't prove shit about your point. There are just as many people in that forum downplaying the dev from CPR (myself included).

You can see what you want to see in that thread, and you can backtrack on the words from the post that I quoted, but it doesn't change the fact that people are taking a measured response to the guy with a negative vague statement just like they are taking a measured response to the guy with a positive vague statement. Even you are admitting that you are you're blowing things far out of proportion.

I agree. I try not to humor rumors unless they go into detail because at least there's something to discuss in those situations.  Vague, non-descript sentences of "it's going to be great" or "people aren't going to like it" just comes off as individuals wanting to get a rise out of others without ruining their reputation if they're wrong.

The only time obvious hyperbole is "blown out of proportion" is when the person reading it takes it as a literal statement.  Normal version of blowing things out of proportion is taking a single statement made by any developer and proclaiming it as either "great" or "bad" news.

I just happen to notice that some people will look to give too much credit to a dev they have no experience with (nintendo exclusive fans with CD Red in your link) when they say something they want to hear, and no credit to a dev that has proven to have inside info in the past (this thread) when they say something they don't like.  And yes, it works the other direction too.  To willfully ignore that though is well, ignorant.

One was said in an actual interview and is an actual dev at an actual game development studio.

The other one is a neogaf account.

Neither should be believed 100% but I'd trust one a whole lot more than the other...

Based on my experiences I would trust CD Red over this guy too.  Doesn't change the underlying fact though that there are people who will downplay any negative news about their console of choice, which is tiring.  Or that there are people out there who will play up the negative news about consoles not of their choice, also tiring.  Or that there are people out there that will trumpet any speck of decent news they get about a console that has yet to be officially unveiled, also tiring.

Also, if the neogaf account wasn't a trusted one, it wouldn't be anything.  Yet, like the NPD numbers and such, there are some neogaf accounts that have credibility.  From what I read here this is one of them, except for in this instance, because the guy isn't blowing sunshine up Nintendo's collective ass.
