Um, what?  Yes there is or it would look all blockly.  Look at a Wii on a 1080p TV, it's painful.

The Wii wasn't a quad-drupling of pixels, it looks worst than merely a blocky image.
You were upscaling 640x480 to 1280x720 or 1920x1080.

For 720P you were doubling the Horizontal Pixels, whilst vertical pixels increased by 50%. - You see the problem with that now, right? You are stretching square pixels into rectangles. - Regardless of how you try to upscale that, it will always look a little funkier than the quadrupling of pixels allowing for a perfect 1:1 scaling.

I don't think you are following me at all.

The Wii isn't upscaled, that's the problem.  The image is just stretched. The TV can stop it from stretching with the correct settings.  It's the lack of good upscaling and anti aliasing which would fuzzy that 4 pixel block depending on what it's neighbors do.  It becomes more blury, but gives up the blocky.

Maybe this image will help:

Really not sure I see any point of Consol over PC's since Kinect, Wii and other alternative ways to play have been abandoned.

Upscaling isn't going to magically add detail to an image.

You are also forgetting that TV's come with an upscaler and will upscale all non-native inputs, so saying that the Wii has no upscaling is entirely inaccurate.

All modern consoles perform Anti-Aliasing.

Again, upscaling 480P to 720P or 1080P is nothing like running 1080P on a 4k panel.

As someone who has no intention of owning a 4K television until they're like $300, and then only when my current televisions die, how bad will upscaled 4K look on 4K sets? I don't actually care about resolution, I'm just curious.

My parents have a 62" 4k TV and I take my PS4 over when I visit and play a bit. I'll need to check out what kind of TV it is next time I got, but I can assure you one thing. I've played Uncharted 4, Black Ops III, and Resident EVII demo. All of them look amazing and far better than on my TV's and monitors at home. There is far more color depth and it's upscaled very well. I've yet to notice any jaggies.

I have seen PS4's on other 4k TV's that look like absolute rat ass. Jaggies out the ass and major pixilation. I would highly suggest that you see if you can test your PS4 on the TV. You may also want to hire someone to professionally tune your TV. That is something my parents did and I want to say that may have made a difference. It requires so rather pricey tools so it's cheaper to hire someone than it is to do it yourself. Plus you'd need to learn how to do it xD

All in all. The upscale is quite amazing on their TV and I'd love to buy one. 4K TV's are not expensive anymore and you could get a really nice 60" TV's around the $1800-$3000 mark. The 70-80" ones will run at least $4000. I've seen some going for $20'000 but those ones are unnecessarily large. Personally I'll need to test a NEO and Scorpio on it to see if there is even a real difference in the upscale factor. PS3 and 360 games looked good enough upscaled on my old 64" 1080p TV from 2004. Which I'd wager was better than most 1080p TV's, even more recently. It also had a very good upscaler.

My best advice is to TEST it out yourself. Wait and see. With the right 4k TV the improvement may or may not be enough of a difference to you personally to factor the cost. Obviously the latter will look better, but the difference to the person will be more personal and will likely come down to the dollar for value and increase to their eyes.

No, the upscalers do not always do what you think they do.  Check out your Wii on a 1080 TV.

I've explained, it, if you want to insist on something you don't follow, so be it.

I'm not the one who isn't following. ;)
