To me, releasing the NEO shows that Sony isn't all that comitted to PSVR after all. If they were, they would release a slim with a dedicated VR port that can be bundled with the glasses for a reasonable price. Now (according to rumors still) Sony is more focussed on keeping the price up to sell premium versions of games. What does that mean for PSVR. Since the userbase for PSVR starts at zero regardless, which version will be better supported. It's already a new way to make games, so how is splitting it over 2 hardware specs going to affect the quality.
It's not about being able to afford it, it's more that the rumors make it seem PSVR is headed to PS Move level of comittment instead of trying to make it a big success. A side business, instead of the next big thing.
I was very excited about Sony backing VR, yet now I'm not so sure. Definitely not $499 sure anymore.
