With the Avatar sequels finally in pre-production, do you think they'l retake the box office throne if The Force Awakens steals it?

There is no way Star Wars will out-gross Avatar.

I am expecting todays numbers to be around $26-28M

With 2nd weekend at $155-60M, it will have crossed 548M by Sunday a little less than estimated $170M by industry/studios due to competition from Joy (Jennifer Lawrence) and Daddy's home(Mark Wahlberg).

So $153M it is and almost as much as predicted. These would be the estimates as of now. Final values by tomorrow could be little more.

Yeah, I am expecting 2-3M more tomorrow :)

Mr. Cameron has a way of having insane legs for his movies. I don't think Star Wars will top Avatar but maybe Titanic. Well deserved either way.

Box Office Mojo just updated their records list, Star Wars took several more records from Jurassic World, bumping it from the #2 record holder to the #6 record holder:

Thanks, I just updated the list ;)

Titanic is bigger than Avatar when you adjust for inflation.

Anyways I think this kind of redeems the Star Wars franchise ... I said it even waaaaay back in 1999, at least domestically IMO Episode I should have beat Titanic, but it was simply too bad of a movie.

The prequels are fortunate they had the hook of "we gotta see Darth Vader" that kept people coming back.

Now we are seeing what Star Wars can do when it has the feel/tone/human element of the original trilogy. Box office records falling right and left.

What we're seeing is a massive marketing campaign that was well executed at work.

I hope starwars episode 7 beats all of them!

Every Star Wars movie has tons of cross-promotional tie-ins, the prequels actually had a far bigger one, a two billion dollar deal with Pepsi.

The Force Awakens is the Star Wars movie the general public wanted. That's why it's going through the roof. It brings back the humanity/fun/mythic nature of the originals.

Hype and marketing really only goes so far, if your film does not connect with viewers then it's eventually going to drop off like a rock.

Getting George Lucas away from the franchise and divorcing the prequel trilogy from the new trilogy was the smartest thing Disney did.

Do you mean episode VII won't outgross Avatar or do you mean Avatar 2?
