Forums - Gaming Discussion - Sony getting away with paid online is the greatest current gen achievement so far.

Yeah I really thought they'll get heavy backlash on this but I guess I didn't pay attention to the progress they were making with PS+. Lol

Thanks to Microsoft and their DRM. Plus at that time PS+ free games were considered awesome value as only Sony did it. So it's a smart use of opportunity.

And not once do I feel ripped off for it. The quality over all has been a HUGE increase from the PS3. Noticeable in every shape and form. The money is clearly being put to good use and I personally feel like I'm getting more than what I pay for by a significant amount. So no.... I don't think it's surprising.

If Nintendo significantly increased their online quality and gives us more. I would gladly pay for their online services as well.

Thank you for your business sir =)

I dunno if I would call that greatest achievement, haha... Yeah, I am not very fond of paid online services at all. Any consoles that do it, I just won't use the online features for them... Hopefully that doesn't happen for NX...

Everyone was too busy screaming at MS for their wacky plan at that E3. Paying a monthly fee for online seemed like a blessing compared to what MS was trying to do.

For two generations people called MS greedy for paid online services. Taking that idea is now an achievement for Sony?

Also, you shouldn't call it an achievement. Since its Sony, it should be called a trophy.

Well what options did consumers have? Xbox also charged for online play.

In fact, just recently someone told me they want a PS4 because they don't want to pay for online play on Xbox.

All thanks to Microsoft.

1.) Microsoft encouraged this trend
2.) Microsoft DRM
3.) PSN was a good deal at the time, so many of us already had the subscription.

Last gen I enjoyed not having to pay for online.  The money saved went into extra games.

Then they launched ps plus and when the good games started coming I subscribed for my ps3 and vita.  Best gaming service I've ever had.

Then ps4 required it but it made no difference because I was subbed anyway.  Well it made a difference. It meant I got an extra 2 games to choose from a month.

Microsoft rightfully got stick for it because they'd never any intention of offered monthly games.  You can thank good guy Sony for changing their minds.

Competition is always good as they say.

We had the option of not buying in back when Microsoft started XBL and major devs/pubs started removing client side server tools from their games.  If they achieved 0 sales, and a shitload of losses incurred, you would've seen that policy changed as fast as Microsoft's DRM.  But no, the immediate satisfaction crowd had to buy into it.  Nooo...don't listen to PC Gamer's, they're the deeeevil.   Gamer's made this bed, now gamer's can sleep in it.
