Forums - Microsoft Discussion - What impacted Halo 5's sales the most?

I really like the game, however I think it will have legs. I do think MCC left a bad taste in people's mouth.

I personally feel like the flow of Halo 5 MP is very good. Everyone has the same 'abilities'.

I feel like the last 2 halo's are the problem. MCC online was broken at launch and still has a ton of online issues (namingly spawning in Halo 1 & 2). I felt like Halo 4 didn't have any stand out maps until their 2nd DLC.

Issues leading up to Halo 5 are lack of split screen and microtransactions. They should have been clear from the start that the microtransactions were supporting Halo tournaments. A lot of people don't know that but seem to think it's actually not a bad idea. I also feel like the card packs aren't a big deal because it's so easy to get packs especially selling cards you won't use. You also get packs for leveling up, booster cards and commendation packs.

I feel the best solution is stop with annual halo universe releases. Halo Wars 2 is already too much, skip 2017 and hope 2018 can regain some momentum.

Like many people said in here.
Another factor i think is dat the Xbox brand no longer leading like back in last-gen.

Most of us know by now that Halo 5 sold considerably less than the previous installments. What do you think caused to impact sales so much?

Personally, I think its just the disappointment of Halo 4 tied with the MCC issues. I think Halo 5 could have sold quite a bit more just if MCC hadn't had the issues at launch.

Halo Reach was the first declined. It sold less than Halo 3 despite there being 4 times the install base when it came out compare to Halo 3. Same thing with Halo 4. Halo 5 is just the first one to be released on a new console after Halo 3 so it looks like a huge decline when it isn't. Although, if we count digital the Halo 5 game should be over the two million mark by now. With black friday and Christmas it should easily be over the 3 million mark by the end of the year. I just can't get over that there are people who think this game will sell less than splatoon. Halo 3 sold more mainly because of budget and there was no competition regarding online multiplayer shooters at the time.

I said it after E3 and had a few people tell me I was wrong but the anticipation for Halo 5 was noticeably less than for Halo 4. Previous Halo entries screamed "epic", while Halo 5 felt more like "further adventures in the Halo universe starring Master Chief and Friends!" The vibe was much different and I don't think it made many non-hardcore Halo fans consider it a must-play game.

This, I think, is what happens when a publisher basically tells you that this series is going to go on forever. You lose that sense of meaningfulness.

when you pretty much know that there is no end for the story, that its going to be an endless cycle of more and more enemies. you lose that intensity. the story becomes meaningless.

its like a soap oprah, no matter how much you watch, you will never see the end. and stories without an ending are basically shit.

Halo 5 is a great game tho, imho. They have the best MP in the franchise.

1- The endless milking of the Halo franchise. CE Anniversary in 2011, Halo 4 in 2012. MCC in 2014 and Halo 5 in 2015. and Halo wars announced for holiday 2016.

2- MS made it clear halo will go on as long as Xbox lives. pretty much saying Halo will never have an ending. that really kills the purpose of being excited about the game and its story. Master Chief will always prevail, and then some new enemy will come and fight him.

3- Quality. 343i is no bungie, and they couldnt sustain the same quality that older Halo games had.

4- No split screen.

5- Low XB1 sales and PS4 stealing a big portion of the shooter audience on XB1.

6- Battlefront and black ops 3 stealing halo's thunder. it just couldnt compete with the big dogs.

I personally enjoyed it. I've always found the Halo series to be shallow in the Lore dept. and this was the first one that made me want to pick up a Halo book. just picked up Fall of Reach.

It's all opinions, maybe people didn't like that 343 went deep in the lore, and people who didn't read the books Like me) got lost. For some, it makes them want to learn more, for others they cant be bothered.

For me personally, any media be it movies, or games that has an interesting story to make me want to read more about it. I think has executed very well.

Destiny.

Bungie left.
i343 is good but they are not what some Halo fans wants... to be fair some Halo fans are Bungie fans and moved to Destiny.

BTW Halo 5 is the less Halo game already made... it is a realy great FPS but it not a good Halo.

That argument would have more validity if Destiny didn't suck. It scored lower than any Halo game, dog shit campaign, no split screen, etc.

I'd argue the best thing about Destiny is PvP but its unbalanced. It would have benefited if Crucible was kept seperate from campaign similar to Halo. That way fans of PvP only would have been more open to playing it.

Taken King scored considerably better because its a less shallow experience and obvously Destiny fans are reviewing it.

Find it odd people mentioning the lack of Split screen co-op as a reason for less sales, the intention behind taking out 2 peoples ability to play through the campaign on a single copy of the game should have led to more purchases of the title. If not for the obvious people not wanting to buy it because they can't play it together locally, I'd imagine that would make for a tough sell to some households who have kids who would play it together if it is even common knowledge that the game can't be played local co-op, which I doubt it is.

Would say the dragging out of the story for me is the worst part, I loved the first trilogy and Halo spoilers from 4 > even got a bit Onion cutty at the end of H4 with the sacrifice that Cortana made to protect the chief with her bubble of love around him, but from some of the promo stuff I see that Cortana is in 5 which not only drags out the story longer but kinda retcons me feeling bad for a characters death in the series and her being saved from Reach at the cost of the whole Noble Team was for nothing if they had a spare laying around somewhere? Meh, just salty I guess myself, I've no doubt that when a Xbox1 finds its way under my TV later this Gen a copy of H5 will be with it tho. Just wasn't the game to tip me over to buying one right now.
