Forums - Microsoft Discussion - What impacted Halo 5's sales the most?

People are not seeing the MOBA genre stealing players from all over including consoles.

343 did not move the franchise forward with Halo 4, according to many. So that put them on the back foot with a lot of people for their take over the franchise game. I don't think MCC was all that big of an issue. And then there was the widespread opinion that the SP campaign was disappointing. perhaps 343 underestimated the extent to which Halo players actually do care about the story and actually do play the game for the SP campaign. Possibly more than any other shooter, Halo is a franchise that has always been as reliant on SP as MP for its reputation.

I don't know how much loss of local split screen had a material effect, but it was yet another disappointment to people who are not primarily online MP focussed in their interest.

Halo 4 was basically a successor to Halo: Reach. It took many ideas from that game and made it better. Reach is a game that gets a lot of praise as well.

I really think much of the criticism towards Halo 4 has more to do with the studio than the game. Halo has declined for the same reasons as other popular IPs, fatigue and market is changing.

Is it just me, or does the industry seem to experiencing shooter fatigue? All the big FPS franchises seem to be down this gen, and I don't see any new games taking their place. Except for destiny, I guess, but I dunno if that's big enough to explain everything.

It'll be interesting to see if Gears 4 is able to defy this trend next year.

Also, with these sales numbers, I wonder if M$ will have 343i branch out a bit after Halo 6. Maybe into new IP's, or at the very least new genres in the Halo universe.

No way they will stop focusing on Halo. Halo made Microsoft more than 400 million in it's first week. About half a billion dollars in revenue. That is nutz.

343 and their inability to make Halo feel like Halo and not a new IP. The amount of vets who fled and never returned after Halo 4 can't be overstated enough.

Gears is no FPS.

Right now we have three big MP-heavy FPS at once. At least on Xbox One. And Halo MCC had massive MP issues in the beginning. With a campaign that's rated good but not great many might have waited how Guardians MP turns out to be.

And yes, there is the digital sales side. Not specific for Halo though. It's always your personal microcosm but i know more and more people that buy at least MP heavy games digital.
