Forums - Sports Discussion - Why USA never jumped the soccer bandwagon?

Mexico is actually.

Also, average attendance for an MLS match is higher than that of an NBA basketball match.

Basketball arenas are generally smaller due to it being indoor and the court is smaller than a football pitch. Also, MLS has 1 game a week for 6 months? While NBA has 82 games over the season meaning 3 games a week for 6 months.

Hmm, pie.

That's kind of unavoidable. Football stadiums are big, NBA stadiums aren't. Without being indoors and having a smaller playing area it's simply not as possible to make it seat that many people. The largest in the US is only about 35k people which is pretty low when compared to large football stadiums.

Beat tme too it. :P

England are one of the most football mad countries in the world and have arguably the best league too yet always underperform when it comes to international football.

Oh come on :P There is no argument here, Premiership is nowhere near to the level of Primera Division and hasn't been there for years, way over a decade now. There is no argument whatsoever, the rank is clear if you control your bias. It's Primera Division - a massive gap - Premiership - an even greater gap - Serie A - massive gap - leagues from Germany, France, Portugal - gap - Turkey, Netherlands, Russia, Ukraine - gap - the rest in a totally random order (who cares anyway). I think I haven't forgotten about any decent league.

While I'll agree the Primera Division is currently better than the Premier Leauge (hence why I said arguably in the first place) it certainly isn't a massive gap, it's actually a pretty small gap. Also, a massive gap between Serie A and the Bundesliga? Maybe, but if there is it's the Bundesliga that's ahead not the Serie A.

Isn't this explained simply by the fact that the premier league features the best players from the world over? Spain is similar. While Germany etc have a much better emphasis on home grown players?

England will never be competitive internationally while the doors are slammed shut on developing Homs grown talent and instead just importing it on the transfer market.

MLS is definitely growing. But the standards are like 2nd tier football in Europe so there is a long way to go. It's more like a retirement home for past their best European players at the moment. :p

RIP Dad 25/11/51 - 13/12/13. You will be missed but never forgotten.

this is like the same thread I made years ago. lol soccer is gradually becoming more popular in 'merica.

oh man!!

"While U.S. professional leagues attract foreign talent in many high-level sports, the strength of football in other parts of the world leads to this reverse migration of talented American players abroad. Just 3 percent of World Cup players are employed by the U.S.’s Major League Soccer. "

United States was fiercely isolationist for most of its history. It wasn't until WWII that the country really started playing on an international stage and by then all of our favorite sports were pretty much set. Things are changing, Baseball has declined in popularity while Gridiron Football and Basketball have become the forerunners. Association Football was a children's sport for years because the game was easy to teach and the equipment cost was low. It was rarely played beyond the high school level. Association is slowly gaining traction, helped by the immigrants who love the sport and the home-grown fan base. Gridiron and Basketball will be kings for the next fifty years at least, but I could easily see Association in the top five sports, probably at number three if the interest in Baseball continues to wane.

Stop calling it soccer, dammit.

What's wrong with Soccer?  What's your problem with the sport of Soccer?  I played Soccer as a kid.  Soccer was a great deal of fun, in camp, after school, tons of soccer.  Probably played more Soccer when I was younger, than I did any other sport.  Kind of strange really, when you think about it.  My interest in soccer didn't really carry over into adulthood.

This post is cringeworthy !

I dunno, it made me chuckle :)

because they want to impose what they do and like instead of liking what most people do. It is a brainwashing nation, so it wants everyone to adopt what they do and not the other way around.

Lol. If you actually think the U.S. is switching to metric any time soon, you've got another thing coming. That's the nicest way I can put it without being banned.

Depends on what you mean by "soon". If I was a gambling man, I'd give it 40 years.
