United States was fiercely isolationist for most of its history. It wasn't until WWII that the country really started playing on an international stage and by then all of our favorite sports were pretty much set. Things are changing, Baseball has declined in popularity while Gridiron Football and Basketball have become the forerunners. Association Football was a children's sport for years because the game was easy to teach and the equipment cost was low. It was rarely played beyond the high school level. Association is slowly gaining traction, helped by the immigrants who love the sport and the home-grown fan base. Gridiron and Basketball will be kings for the next fifty years at least, but I could easily see Association in the top five sports, probably at number three if the interest in Baseball continues to wane.
