Technically MGS V is cross-gen.

Which IMO makes it even more impressive because the game was held back by last gen consoles not to mention that reviewers nowadays are hard to impressed.

That's not true, all the big prestigious franchises (i.e not new IPs) have gotten very high reviews this year: Bloodborne (spiritual succesor), TW3 and MGS5.

They're hard to impress when it comes to games like 2D platformers, but they lose all critical thought when they're reviewing prestigious open world games. If a 2D or 3D platformer ever shipped with as many bugs and glitches as Skyrim it would be sitting at a 50-60% meta. Skyrim is GOTY though. ;)

I'm sure Uncharted 4, Zelda U and Fallout 4 will easily get over 90% as well. Even a big turd like Skyward Sword got a ridiculously high score.

I can't be arsed to go over all the flaws of Skyward Sword, so I'll just post this review:

93% my ass.

Probably you didn't see my post when I said that until now, I thought it was impossible to score at least 95 this gen and MGS proved me wrong.  I mean look at this:

Last gen:  GTA 4, LBP 1, orange box, Gears of war 1, bioshock 1, mario galaxy 1, zelda TP, COD 4 MW, MGS 4: everyone one of them had at least 94 on meta in almost similar period (only took games until 2008).

current gen: MGS 5 (only one that have at least 94).

I went from 95 to 94 and still can only find one game this gen that have that score, that's why I said it's more difficult to impressed them now compare to the beginning of last gen.  I didn't say reviewer don't give good score.  there are obviously some 92 and 93 this current gen but they are nowhere near as much as last gen in the same time period.

Edit: just in case, always meant in comparison to last gen.

Ah, I understand you better now. Well, this gen has taken a while to get really started!

Will buy for sure, let's just hope it isn't as heavy on the 30 minute + cutscenes. Gameplay seems solid (pun intended) but I'll have to try it to make up my mind.

From what all the reviews are saying there isn't. The game is mostly getting praise for its gameplay.

That's good news, even though I loved the gameplay in MGS4, the cutscenes were just too much. Been a huge fan of the series since the NES days and especially after MGS on PS1, but the narrative masturbation became too much throughout the series...

Normally I would agree with you. I remember listening to a gametrailers podcast where the guy reviewing Skyward Sword was giving his impressions of the game at the halfway point, saying that it was a massive disappointment and perhaps the worst Zelda game in the series. Then 2 weeks later he gave it a 9.3 and when he returned to the podcast to explain, he said it "finished really strong". Naturally when I heard that, I thought that no game that could evoke the feelings he had for it early, could possibly finish strongly enough to score a 9.3 lol. Fallout 3 has a Metascore of 9.3 and it's amazing the entire way through, not just the 2nd half. Same with games like Arkham City. A 96% metacritic? Huh? The amount of incredible games with lower metascores is astounding, like Skyrim, Last of Us, GTA 3, Final Fantasy VII, etc. So you do have to take reviews with a grain of salt for sure.

BUT Metal Gear is an amazing franchise and I'm not cynical towards this metascore at all. Every entry since 1998 has scored over 9 on Metacritic. The series is not the beneficary of flawed modern reviewing. It's a game that took 6 years to make and looks it, with the amount of polish and content it has. My favourite game in the series is 3 (which is my 2nd favourite game overall) and I'm excited to see if this game can top it.

I didn't ask if there would be cutscenes, I just want more gameplay than cutscenes this time. I don't mind a focus on story, but the main focus should always be stealth gameplay.

The cut scene ratio will be unlike any of the other MGS games. Some reviewers said they haven't seen any cutscenes longer than 3 minutes an they are quite spread out between mission. This game seems to have the least amount of cutscenes in the series and is more focuses on filling in the blanks and a HUGE major twist at the end. The game play is where it's at. The huge wide scale and limitless ways to tackle your challenges. I would say buy the game and if you don't like it trade it in. I'm pretty confident that you will like it! :)

Down to 94 as result.

So Metal Gear Solid 2 is still the king!

One thing's for sure, you know you've had a pretty dang good career when "your biggest failure" still nets you an 80 :P

Mathematically. 95 is going to be very hard to hold.  A review can only be higher than the average by a maximum of 5 points (6 now) while a worse score can be lower by many times more, as seen here.  I'm just interested in seeing if Metal Gear Solid V can finally top Super Mario 3D World as the highest rated 8th gen (I'm counting Metal Gear Solid V because the 8th gen are the primary platforms.  GTA V, Last of Us are both primarily 7th gen games that were updated and ported to 8th gen) game.  It just needs to hold 94 to get it.
