That's not true, all the big prestigious franchises (i.e not new IPs) have gotten very high reviews this year: Bloodborne (spiritual succesor), TW3 and MGS5. They're hard to impress when it comes to games like 2D platformers, but they lose all critical thought when they're reviewing prestigious open world games. If a 2D or 3D platformer ever shipped with as many bugs and glitches as Skyrim it would be sitting at a 50-60% meta. Skyrim is GOTY though. ;) I'm sure Uncharted 4, Zelda U and Fallout 4 will easily get over 90% as well. Even a big turd like Skyward Sword got a ridiculously high score. |
Normally I would agree with you. I remember listening to a gametrailers podcast where the guy reviewing Skyward Sword was giving his impressions of the game at the halfway point, saying that it was a massive disappointment and perhaps the worst Zelda game in the series. Then 2 weeks later he gave it a 9.3 and when he returned to the podcast to explain, he said it "finished really strong". Naturally when I heard that, I thought that no game that could evoke the feelings he had for it early, could possibly finish strongly enough to score a 9.3 lol. Fallout 3 has a Metascore of 9.3 and it's amazing the entire way through, not just the 2nd half. Same with games like Arkham City. A 96% metacritic? Huh? The amount of incredible games with lower metascores is astounding, like Skyrim, Last of Us, GTA 3, Final Fantasy VII, etc. So you do have to take reviews with a grain of salt for sure.
BUT Metal Gear is an amazing franchise and I'm not cynical towards this metascore at all. Every entry since 1998 has scored over 9 on Metacritic. The series is not the beneficary of flawed modern reviewing. It's a game that took 6 years to make and looks it, with the amount of polish and content it has. My favourite game in the series is 3 (which is my 2nd favourite game overall) and I'm excited to see if this game can top it.
