Forums - Politics Discussion - Jeb Bush: People Need to Work Longer Hours

Just cut taxes, that way people can keep more of the money they earn, without being paid more by the employer, and without having to work more hours.

Revenue from low-income earners is so insignificant anyway, that'd barely have any effect on the overall budget.

anyway on topic, i work 12-15 hour days, and usually weekends to on the norm, being a v-22 crewchief/mechanic. i dont want to work more.

Wow, is that being on-site, or do you actually work all that time? Sounds like a cool job anyway, I hope it pays well at least.

How about you increase taxes for the rich first? Lol. Warren Buffet himself once found out that he paid a (substantially) smaller tax than his secretary (percentage wise of course). How?

because he hired the best tax lawyers he could, to find any and all tax deductions, and "loopholes" he could, and because his secretary is aparently retarded and doesnt know how to file taxes. oh, and because buffet is a lying hypocrit, who could pay a much higher tax if he wanted to, like he claims, and in fact can pay extra to the irs (the amount he claims is fair, yet doesnt do)

I see, getting all that taxpayer money already made you lazy like a socialist. /s

Increased productivity means more output for the input, having people work longer hours doesn't increase productivity.

Also if you MEAN more people in full time jobs then you say "part timers moving into full time employments. Or part time workers getting more hours. You don't say "people have to work longer hours". IN normal speak :longer hours" means more hours than normal.

40 productive hours a week for 47 or 48 weeks a year, less public holidays, is all anyone should need to work to be able to make enough of a living to get by in reasonable comfort.

"When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace."

I think he is more talking about supporting a system where you don't have people working at McDonald's in their 30's and 40's for a living, making minimum wage, and constantly complaining about the government not helping or them not get paid enough. We do, and maybe it's just a modern thing, have this problem.

What is a normal work week in the US?

In Holland it's between the 32 and 40 hours a week and 40 is most of the time the max you can work in a week if you have 1 job.

In Colombia is 40 - 48 hours a week, and 15 days of paid vacations in a year. Additionally minimum wage is 250 U$ per month.

I work 12 hours yesterday. Thats half a day. I refuse to work anymore. "Need to work more" my ass. Is this the solution for poor wages in America; work more?

You know, I couldn't care less about how/why Warren avoids taxes, the rich shouldn't be able to get a near 0% tax rate regardless...

No one should be at 0% tax rate imo.  If everyone paid taxes even if only a small amount, we wouldn't have this ridiculous amount of national debt.

At my job, I work 50 hour weeks on average, 60+ during crunch time. Since I'm salary, the amount of money I earn during those 60 hour weeks is the same as the 50 hour weeks. I haven't taken a vacation since February.

Meanwhile, in our German office, they are require to NOT exceed 40 hours a week, and they get the equivalent of 3 months vacation, as well as a ton of bank holidays. I swear, every time I need to talk to the ops guy in the German office, he's on a week long vacation.

Screw this guy and his warped notion that working longer hours = more productivity = more pay. From my understanding, research actually implies the opposite. Your productivity plummets when you exceed 40 hours and the diminishing returns don't make it worth it. But, hey, we're just salary, so it's not like the company has to foot the bill for the extra hours that are of low productivity. It's just gravy for them.
