Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Miyamoto Expains Why Wii U has Failed

I'm thinking here, didn't the Wii U put Nintendo in a sort of vicious cycle? It's basically one gen behind PS4/One. NX or whatever will be released in the middle of the gen, so they can catch up, but by then, Sony and MS already have strong installed bases... rinse and repeat.

What can they do to stay competitive in the home console market? I really hope they come up with something, having three equally strong console manufacturers would be great.

That's super interesting. The main feature of the Wii U was a piece of technology that is so rapidly growing it became obsolete very very quickly.

Maybe people should place their bets on battery technology cause that shit is stagnant. (come on Tesla).

Doing the same stuff that Sony does won't put them back on top. Just because you imitate someone doesn't mean you will get the same results as them.

"Something new" is good and I hope they embrace it.

My point is that they need to make a strong game box because exclusives sell consoles. I don't think that "new experiences" sell consoles (although they struck gold with Wii and that's unluckily to happen again soon). First of all, games sell consoles. Stick with something that has worked. Why would you change the controller in every generation? Why do you need a proprietary disc? Why don't you make the gamepad an optional controller from the beginning?

I know they work hard to bring good experiences for the player but it seems obvious that most of the gamers just want to push buttons. They could bring some of those experiences  with optional acessories.

I think that if the PS4, XONE and Wii U had same especifications and same multiplats Nintendo could have won the generation! They have some strong IPs. They can rely on them for some time.

Controller gamer's and tablet gamer's are slightly different.

Gamer's want a traditional game controller, a TV/ Monitor and their in heaven. Make the controller light weight, fits good in your hands and solid button layout. We don't want to look down back and forth at the TV set. It just dosen't work for us.

Tablet gamer's want a tablet, don't care for buttons and loves to be mobile with their gaming.

Other than that, Lack of solid unique games, Next gen games, yes I said it, most games on the Wii U just don't stack up to the PS4/XBOX1.

Even one year ago if I said gamepad is a gimmick people would get angry and say its a unique factor. Lol. How time has changed.

Video gaming has always been simple controller with a moderately powerful system with a good variety of games. Wii U tablet is a complex concept compared to successful systems. Remember NES / SNES days? One dpad with two buttons were enough. Dual analogs are necessary expansion and it doesn't need to go more complex.
A complex controller that makes the system expensive, weaker hardware, no clear vision and expecting third parties to come coupled with strong word of mouth of competitors system Wii U couldn't had any worse position.

I bought a wii u and love Nintendo games but I admit I would struggle to recommend it to anyone who wasn't so smitten with Nintendo's games. The wii u is horribly underpowered, has a tiny library of software and on a technical level is generally beaten by ps3 and 360. Certainly as a ps3 and 360 owner myself I find both those consoles more impressive for their best games.

I think when the truth comes out about the gpu of the wii u I think people will be surprised again just how low Nintendo went. Many believe its 352 gflops in performance but the truth is likely to be almost half that. It's only because its gpu architecture is later than 360 and ps3 that its gpu can outperform then but its still crippled by low memory bandwidth and very weak cpu performance.

I just think Nintendo need to provide better hardware to their developers. The wii u performance level makes it extremely difficult for Nintendo to make impressive games that sell the console. Even Zelda Windwaker HD has slowdown and that's a game that runs on the Gamecube.

Just think what would have been achieved in Mario kart if the wii u had been equipped with a 900 gflops gpu and a cpu lets say of four jaguar cores rather than 8.

I don't believe Nintendo's consoles have to be cutting edge but at least a performance level that is in the same ballpark area as ps4 and xbone. Call of duty at 60fps on 360 but struggling to get to 30fps on wii u when its claimed to be a next gen console is clearly ridiculous.

I love the gamepad. If the whole concept he just explained in the interview had been cut into a commercial showing off ways that it could improve a consoles place in the livingroom back in 2012 and Nintendo had aired the crap out of it, there would be 30 million Wii U's on the market right now. Unfortunately, Nintendo's most misunderstood console hit at precisely the time they were making austerity measures in advertising... Too bad. Like I said, the Wii U is my current favorite console. I miss the functional aspects of the ganepad while on my PS4.

EDIT: Also, let's not pretend that an underpowered console still costing $300 in year three didn't have anything to do with it.

It's nice to see some honesty from this company. But I wonder when Reggie will come out and pr bs spin this thing.

I think it's a combination of both. The Wii was a completely new experience but yeah, it wouldn't have sold as much if there wasn't an exclusive game that used it. That's where Wii Sports comes in. It had a big part in Nintendo's success. Both a new experience and a game that showcases it are needed. That's one of the reasons why the Wii U failed, it didn't have that "Wii Sports" game.

But all in all I somewhat agree with your post.

"I've Underestimated the Horse Power from Mario Kart 8, I'll Never Doubt the WiiU's Engine Again"

its actually very promising that Nintendo recognizes that the Tablet was one of the biggest reasons the system failed. the majority of casuals want something thats easy to use in terms of controllers. whether its a traditional controller or motion controls- both were fairly simple to plug in and play

obviously focusing on the controller more than anything else cost Nintendo this time around. good that they understand that was the biggest issue
