Forums - Gaming - Quality of X1 and PS4 exclusives 2015

Let's take a look at the quality of exclusives for both the X1 and PS4.

All scores are used from gameranking.com. Scores without brackets are for games already released and have a score assigned. Scores within brackets are a little more complex due to the game now being released.

To come up with a score in brackets I used the following method to make it as fair as possible.

How scores were chosen, in order of importance;

  • If games was released on another platform, that score was used
  • If game is in a franchise, an average score for the last 3 games from that franchise was used, if game is part of main franchise (not a spin off), then only main games in the main franchise will be used.
  • If game is a new IP then an average score for the last 3 games from that developer was used

Scores weren't used if (including games used to make an average score for unreleased games);

  • The gameranking score for game had less than 5 reviews
  • Games that are on mobile devices

I tried to make it as accurate as I could. Scores in brackets are only a indications of the quality of the IP/developer used from past games.

Enjoy the information, chat away, avoid pointless arguments although constructive debates are welcome. If you disagree with somebody, please don't be rude and counter in a respectful and contructive way, providing reasons and evidence where possible. Anybody not following the rules, hopefully mods will deal with them quickly as to not disrupt the thread.

Hmmm.

Some suggestions, though i might be making it too complex:

- Find a way to differentiate between small-scale and AAA releases
- Differentiate digital only releases.
- Investigate the use of bands. For example, using a flat average of all games of a certain type will include a few small and badly performing games, that will skew the otherwise very appealing nature of better games.

Finally, you're missing Fable Legends, which is pegged for a 2015 release, and on your criteria will come with a ranking of about 84-85.

Well ... it HAD to come to this in the end! lol.

The PS5 Exists.

1 - Not sure if that would be simple. There is no black and white, no big or small. There a lot of grey areas and everybody will see it in a different way. For instance how would you class Ether One? It's one of those middle ground games in terms or scales.

2 - I might be able to do this. I can bold digital games or something.

3 - Do you mean games use to produce an average score for unreleased games? When I was doing it, they all seemed preety fair. Do you see anything out of place?

Will fix Fable Legends now

Bloodborne is a 92% by the way.

1. True, it wouldn't be easy - but its fair to say that many wont perceive an 80 game based on a four man team with a charming 2d campaign to have the same value as an 80 game with a 100 man team with excellent graphics and a comprehensie multiplayer.

2. Good idea.

3. No I don't mean the individual games - more that when you average them out, you get an unrepresentative notion of the quality of a console's library. I think the Wii is a great example. It had some of the best games of last generation - but the sheer weight of shovelware it had meant that just providing an average made the library look worse than it was. Your PS4's console exclusives include a whole host of game under 65 for example. In gaming review vernacular, that makes them pretty bad games (whereas movie reviewers tend to make use of the entire review spectrum). Perhaps, in addition to your averages, you could average the top five games in each category for example - giving a better idea of the quality of games a larger portion of players will enjoy.

I think the simplest way of going about it is to just separate games into retail and digital-only groups. There will occasionally be an obvious exclusion (like an indie retail collection or a limited indie retail run), but it works most of the time and involves little work. It also avoids definition debates, since while 'AAA' is used in a dozens different contexts by different people and companies, 'retail' is pretty firm :p
