Forums - PC Discussion - 980Ti worth it?

So, as some of you know, I'm building a rig this month and I just got an e-mail stating that the shops have gotten the 980Ti in stock within this or next week!

Now, initially, I was going with the 980GTX, and then AMD rumors started circulating that their 390X would feature 8GB of HMB, but this has later turned out to be most likely false. Now, on the one hand, the 390X will likely be a lot cheaper than the 980Ti but will only have 6GB, the 980GTX will go down in price as of right now but only has 4GB and it appears that the first 8GB single-gpu possibilities will appear in 2016.

My question to the nerds is as follows? Is it worth it? I can obviously afford it and I'm planning on building a rig that will last me about 5 years or so, the 980Ti clings very, very closely to the Titan X in performance and I'm going with 1440p gaming from here on out, I'm not keen on waiting for 8GB cards since I need a new PC now.

A cheap(er) GTX980 with 3rd party mods for more OC, the new 390X with ultra-fast HMB stacks or the monstrous 980Ti for proper future-proofing of my rig?

The 980Ti looks like a good card. The 390X is now rumored to have 8GB's of GDDR and the HBM equipped card will be called the Radeon Fury. Take it with a grain of salth though, AMD will anounce the 300 series at Computex, which starts tomorrow if I'm not mistaken.

Yeah, news have been scarce, which is annoying this close to release.

If the 8GB rumor is true, it could be a good purchase, if I get a 3rd party modded one I might avoid the noise/heat as well. I'm going to spend a sizeable amount on a GPU regardless.

Hm, 4GB for 1440p for the next 5 years? I'm not sure about that. Yeah, I'd go with the 6GB Ti if money isn't an issue.

I usually bought 200€ cards every 2 years and got my first expensive one in spring 2012 with a GTX 680 and I'm surprised how well it still does. More expensive cards can be worth it.

Yeah, I'm thinking that buying a 4GB top-of the line at the peak of their price points is kinda worthless now. If the 390X is indeed 8GB and matches the rumored benchmarks (beating the Titan X), then I'm going for it, noise and heat and driver issues be damned. Seems like it could be a damn good deal if pricing rumors are true (650-ish dollars at release, a good 100 below the 980Ti).

For the difference in price, personally, I'd reach for a gtx 970. Obviously, the 980 ti is a lot stronger, just not enough to justify the price discrepancy.

Maybe wait a bit to see how 390X performs. That said:

After watching Linus's review of the Ti and the benchmarks on PCG I don't feel it;s worth it, at elast for me since the avg fps benches aren't showing bigger gains than I;d originally hoped for and 4k benchmarks aren't looking that great either, I'd rather jump into 4k when it's cheaper (where I won't need to splurge for two cards to get constant 60fps) and 60fps becomes the norm for it.

The card itself is apparently meant to be going for $650 which still sounds expensive, for me in the UK it'll either go for £500+ or mid $400's if I'm extremely lucky but in the end it;s release will push down the regular 980's, I;d rather just go with a cheaper 980 myself and wait 2 or 3 more years until Nvidia really throws out even better cards that can properly handle 4k 60fps at more decent prices than what they are doing now.

It's up to you though, if you have the dosh and want it then go for it if you feel it will serve your needs, for me it just doesn't have the bigger gains I;d hoped it would and it;s not exactly cheap either, Titan X was never a factor into my builds let alone any desire to purhcase one so it being less than a Titan X just further dampens my expectations.

Step right up come on in, feel the buzz in your veins, I'm like an chemical electrical right into your brain and I'm the one who killed the Radio, soon you'll all see

So pay up motherfuckers you belong to "V"

I'm not planning on going for 4k gaming any time soon, the Titan X struggles to run even aging games in 4k with effects toggled, I don't think single GPU's will run 4k gaming without stutter for another two chipset generations or so.
I really want to know more about the 390x, it appears to possibly be the best purchase among the choices I have but 4GB is a no-go, regardless of whether or not its HBM or GDDR5.

"I can obviously afford it and I'm planning on building a rig that will last me about 5 years or so,"

Not worth upg atm... wait for next node.... eg 16nm gpu's, if you want 5years out of the purchase.
