Forums - Gaming Discussion - Witcher 3 Xbox One and PS4 Compared After Patch

After playing through the first hour of both the PS4 and Xbox One versions, CD Projekt have ensured that the game is heavily optimized performance wise. We tested both versions with the day one patch installed and are pleased to report that the game surprisingly runs at a consistent 30 frames per second. However there is a catch. The frame rate is unlocked resulting into frame pacing issues. The frame rate fluctuation isn’t that drastic to cause judder during gameplay but it is noticeable at times. Hopefully, CD Projekt will provide a 30 fps locked option in a future patch, which should help in improving the visual experience by a bit.

Talking about pixel count, the PS4 version takes the lead with a native 1920 X 1080p presentation. The Xbox One version fluctuates consistently between 900p and 1080p depending on the set of resources that the GPU currently has at a given state. But The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt on the Xbox One is rendered at 900p resolution during most times. This immediately gives rise to better image quality on the PS4. But other that, there is absolutely no differences between the two console counterparts.

Both versions are employing temporal anti-aliasing solution resulting into crisp and sharp edges. Everything form volumetric to alpha effects are identical on the PS4 and Xbox One. Despite one console having a superior GPU than the other, he draw distance and texture streaming is surprisingly similar on both the consoles. Texture quality seems to be identical as well but the Xbox One version does have the advantage of better anisotropic filtering. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt features a massive world so CD Projekt have used sequential loading for assets resulting into a slight pop in and streaming issues at times, especially when charging on a horse.

Overall, our initial impressions of the console version of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt are extremely positive. We had some concerns regarding how CD Projekt will maintain a 30 frames per second experience in a such an amazingly dense world. But it seems that they have nailed it. We will follow up with a detailed article later this week, comparing the console versions against the superior PC build. We will also consider dynamic variables such as weather and time in our final verdict. Stay tuned as we have more to share from the wild world of The Witcher 3. In the meantime check out our head to head comparison between the PS4 and Xbox One version in 1080p and 60fps below.

UPDATED: A Full Anlaysis Below

Overall, the fact Xbox One tends to holds a higher frame-rate is misleading in terms of the quality of the end experience; a capped 30fps is by far the preferred option in this case and we still hope to see it implemented in a future update. The PS4 release has the right tactic, but it lets itself down by being unable to stream in world geometry or render effects at a perfect 30fps to take advantage of this. The perceived effect is a judder to motion on both consoles, for cut-scenes and gameplay, though PS4 is capable of smoother passages of play at times. When it comes to performance, and factoring in the game's superior 1920x1080 output, Sony's hardware is a preference - but it's not the clear choice we had expected.

Our full analysis of The Witcher 3 is en route now the PC release is out, where we'll cover how PS4 and Xbox One hold up to its best graphics settings. As a frame of reference, these consoles already appear to lurk at the PC's mid-point in terms of overall quality - with extras like velocity-based motion blur, chromatic aberration, bloom, and light shafts all engaged. On the visual front the PC's likely set for an expected win, but the hardware required to run at its 'uber' foliage preset and its Nvidia Hairworks fur effects could be a sticking point - even for more capable graphics hardware.

This reeks of parity considering the Xone has better anisotropic filtering, but a bit lower resolution.

Please excuse my (probally) poor grammar

Anisotropic filtering has been an issue on PS4 for a long time, I'm just glad they seemed to get around the same results there. 1080p PS4 and 900p XBO will be the standard for games this gen I think, doubt there will be many other differences.

Here's the PS4/XB1 analysis: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2015-witcher-3-wild-hunt-performance-analysis

XB1 with unlocked framerate and PS4 with drops.

I think they should have locked the XB1 version, too and it would have been better for the PS4 version to have a dynamic buffer like the XB1 version. Stable 30 FPS with PS4 mostly at 1080p and XB1 mostly at 900p would be possible.

I've been aware of it, but is there any particular reason for that?
