Not sure how you got that idea? If you mean when it comes to home consoles Sony with PS4 is the only one that will have decent sales in Japan this generation than obviously yes. But when it comes to handhelds Japan is the only market keeping Sony alive.

But what do you expect will happen in Japan in the future then? Do you expect the home console market to shrink even further? And what if you ask yourself the same question for handhelds?

What will happen in Japan will depend on what Nintendo does for both, home consoles and handhelds. Xbox can be written off, Microsoft is not going to bother. Sony will maintain the status quo, even if that means that their home consoles will not sell more than 10m units again. So it's all up to Nintendo. I don't think they are happy with the current status despite a generation where they will sell over 20m handhelds in Japan alone, so they will change what they've been doing. What exactly their next home console and handheld is going to be, that's up in the air, but they aren't going to sit idly by and watch how the market for dedicated gaming hardware shrinks. If Nintendo is able to present a coherent vision, then I expect both segments to grow in the ninth generation.

I agree if there are going to be any surprises they are going to come from Nintendo. I would also like to add that looking at the charts in the OP it wouldn't surprise me if at some point the gaming market simply overheated. Sales might be lower than what we have come to expect from Japan, but they are now much more in line with other country's when we look at population size.

What wii u is selling ok are you serious it will probably not even sell better then Gamecube

Well i meant ok at best, but they are in line with expectations. I don't think Wii would have faired much better if it wasn't for the motion controls. I was just pointing out that comparing console sales to last gen doesn't make much sense because of the huge difference in sales of Wii and Wii-U, while the first one was mostly sold to casuals.

You don't need to compare it with Wii to know Wii u is doing so bad,Gamecube is the worst selling Nintendo console and Wii u is behind it so it's not doing ok it's doing terrible.

i would said wii u is doing ok if it was selling on part with Nintendo 64

PS4 - over 100 millions let's say 120m
Xbox One - 70m
Wii U - 25m

Vita - 15m if it will not get Final Fantasy Kingdoms Heart and Monster Hunter 20m otherwise
3DS - 80m

My personal experience, having lived in Japan for nearly three years:

Previous generations were bigger because the number of children, teens and people in their 20s was much bigger. It's mostly just a demographics issue.

Unlike in Western countries, where adults seem to keep playing games, most Japanese adults seem to give up on it as soon as they find a job with a permanent contract. They simply have no time to play games anymore, because many people work insane hours and are 100% dedicated to their jobs, and the little time they get they often need to spend with their families. Hence handheld gaming grew exponentially as home consoles declined, those teens became adults and now played mostly on the train. Now that everyone has a smartphone, that is replacing handheld gaming too, because it's more convenient for most people. Japanese people are obsessed with "convenience". Seriously, you'll hear that word here all the time.

Other smaller factors: many adults seem content with replaying old games from the NES-PS2 era, and don't much care for better graphics. Retro gaming is really big here. Another thing I often get is people saying modern games are too "difficult", which is funny because most people would say otherwise, so I think they mean "complex".

As for your arguments on the Japanese industry, it might be true that Japanese output has declined, but that's also to do with there not being too big a market and games becoming expensive to make. However, I'd like to point out that many teens and kids are way more interested Western games than adults, Actually, most people I know with PS4s are fairly into Western games like GTA, CoD, Battlefield or Minecraft. Those are definitely the top 4, but there is more buzz for Western games in general among the core gamers left. Those people also seem more willing to buy PS4s right now.

Great response. Japan in certain respects "peaked" in the 1980s.  Since then the economy has seen modest to no growth and the population has stagnated and even declined in recent years.  I would expect any industry in Japan that skews young to struggle more and more in coming decades.

I wouldn't worry about it, i think we have reached the end of the decline in Japan for consoles and we will see slight increases from here on out. I fully expect PS4 to outsell the PS3(and probably ps3 and x360 combined). So then what's left is the large number of casuals that have left after the Wii. The home console market is about to reach a solid baseline in Japan.

The X360 has no significant sales, but the PS3 sold more than 10M in Japan. The PS4 sold around 1M in it's first year. Even if it sells better now, it will have difficulties to catch PS3.
