Ok, let me break it down.

Sakurai wanted a character from Fire Emblem: Awakening, since that was one of the games he played during his free time.

Logically, he considered Chrom at first, as he's the main character of Awakening.

However, Sakurai decided against it, as there wasn't much he could do to differentiate him from coming off as a generic blue-haired swordsman, like Marth and Ike.

Robin was chosen over Chrom, because Robin uses magic, and the fact that we didn't have a Fire Emblem character with magic in Super Smash Bros. allowed Sakurai to easily put Robin in the game without having to differentiate him, as he's radically different from Marth and Ike.

As for Lucina, she was intended to simply be a palette swap for Marth, but ended up being a full-flegded character. Since Lucina is a clone, she took no time to be developed compared to a completely original newcomer like Robin.

Haha, this pretty much covers the question.

Also, I was one of the people who hoped Robin would get in, and am so glad he/she did. Chrom isn`t that interesting of a character, so he didn`t offer as much as Robin did. And Lucina... guess it took less time and resource just to make her a clone.

I'm very glad Robin and Lucina are in over Chrom.

Chrom, to Sakurai, was just another sword slashing fighter. There wasn't much wiggle room for originality. But Robin had so much to offer. HOWEVER, LUCINA HAS NO REASON TO BE PRESENT! She should have just been a skin, at best...like the Koopa Kids. I know the story that stat balancing mad here a character slot but come on, there are TONS of FE characters that had more potential than a watered down Marth.

Robin is good to add, Lucina should've been a Marth alternative costume.

Lucina as an alt costume results in...

~4 Costumes for each instead of 8

~Would of been a Direct Clone

~1 less character on the roster, since she as well as the other 2 didn't take anybody's slots.

TBH i wished Alph was also his own character with Rock pikmin...

Lucina pretty much IS a an alt costume. She's Marth, just balanced differently. I don't understand all this "she should have just been an alt costume" when Sakurai himself has already come out and said clone characters didn't take up any character slots that would have gone to something else.

I'm glad they took a bit of time to make her a bit different, give her her own trophy, her own Palutena's Guidance, her own ending animation in classic mode. And absolutely nothing was lost in exchange for this stuff.

Seriously? Who doesn't love Robin?

You can't play Lucina the way you play Marth that's why she became her own character, the balance changes on her resulted in a different approach of play being needed, Marth is strategic and needs to space well while Lucina has to be hyper aggressive and rush an opponent, these are two vastly different styles of play. This is what happened with other characters like Dr. Mario and Dark Pitt as well, they're not clones they're alternative styles of play with the moveset, this is basic Ken and Ryu concept.
