Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Analyst sees signs of hope for Wii U to be competitive against PS4/XOne

It desperately needs a price cut. Nintendo isn't being aggressive enough. Its mostly their own fault that the WiiU isnt selling.

Lewis Ward, an industry analyst with research firm IDC, said that a year ago he would have said that their wasn’t much of a future for the Wii U, but he now feels that the console has a fighting chance against the PlayStation 4 and Wii U. Ward says that the Wii U will never be the top selling console, but it can remain competitive.

Why would the Wii U fight itself? :O

Oops, thanks! Corrected it.

Why take losses on a failed system? Nintendo knows whats up and isn't going to incur financial bleeding for a system that's going nowhere.

The only thing worse than a failed system is a failed system you bled tons of money on (see: Sega Saturn, Sega Dreamcast).

Besides it's not like $299.99 is some outrageous price. The damn thing comes with 2 free games on top of that. If you don't like it at $299.99, I don't think you're going to do backflips to get one at $249.99. What does $299.99 buy these days? Like the lowest storage version of an iPad mini?

The Slim PS3 is still $269.99.

Guys guys, Wii U is not part of the console wars, nintendo does there own thing remember ^_^ Lets just all play games and be happy :)

Eh, it does have a fighting chance but I highly doubt it could still compete against the XOne let alone the PS4..

Well the Ipad mini is a success, so it doesnt need a price cut. Just like the PS4. If your shit isnt selling, then lower the price. Why not even try it for a couple of months? Nintendo can afford it. No risk, no reward.

I see what he means in a way. Back when Wii U was doing awful pre-PS4/One, the general thought among many was, "if Wii U is doing this bad now, it will be killed once the competitors arrive", yet in 2014, Wii U sales increased despite the added competition and 2015 has even been better thus far.

Basically Wii U is largely unaffected by what's going on with the other consoles.

People are still buying PS3s nearly 10 years later, sometimes more than they are the Wii U. Why drop the price of something that is selling anyway?

A $199 32 GB Wii U would compete globally with Xb one pretty well and it would comnpete strongly with PS4 in Japan.

Nintendo really needs to put daylight between Xb one's price and Wii U. There is only a $50 gap right now, with Xb one having 2 free games, making the Xb one hardware effectively cheaper than Wii U. There is no way tey can compete with that with just games and figurines. What they should do is use the popularity of the figurines to cross subsidise a significant price cut, on the basis that, of course, with an increasing install base you will get even more Amiibo sales. Nintendo's problem is they are stuck with a mindset that they must make profit on hardware, which means a $199 price point is off the table. At $199 you would get several million current PS4 / Xb one owners buying a Wii U, because why the hell not at that price?

Do it Nintendo.
