Forums - Gaming Discussion - Nvidia announces Shield console, $199, more powerful than Wii U, plus 1080p/60 fps streaming service

I'm kind of struggling to see what the point of this system is. It's cheap, yes... but even a relatively low-end PC (which many gamers will already have) can do anything this system seems to be able to do. Am I missing something? I mean, is this all the details?

I seriously doubt that the games are running on the box themselves ...

$199 for that type of performance sounds too good to be true and that especially goes for the hardware housing a Tegra X1 which is not even comparable to the X1 ...

There's got to be a catch and I'm guessing that higher end games are online only ...

The catch is the latency.  Unplayable to most hardcore gamers

The real game changer is the streaming service. The latency needs to be lowered, and I'm sure it will be. If they can get it around 100ms it should be plenty for most gameplay. They could just as easily mercenary this service to other devices and phones and the like. It could be something incredible. Problem is that it doesn't have any exclusive content. Netflix was great for what it was, but it really stood out on its own then it got its own original programming.

If they decide to go mercenary service Nintendo NEEDS to get in touch with them. If they are going to make their original stuff, then we'll have to wait and see what they can do.

More poweful than the Wii U, 100 bucks less. Yep, I trust people to make the right decision here.

The vast majority of Wii U games will not be on it....

I get it! The right answer is to get that instead of a PS4 and XBone because it's cheaper and gives basically the same experiences as the Xbone and PS4.

Those 2 are too expensive though, needlessly expensive to be honest. Be honest, if most people needed to choose between a 3rd party game machine and a Nintendo game machine, and then if they're told the 3rd party one is 100 bucks cheaper, guess which one would be outselling the other 10 to 1.

I'm now filled with determination.

True... Very true. Maybe it will come to fruition.

So the company that talks about how crap consoles are and how weak the PS4 is make a gaming device that they say will change the face of the gaming industry.

And guess what, its a console marginally on par with the weakest console out there (assuming cpus don't exist since they want us to believe that an arm CPU is on par with an X64 CPU) and that can stream games.

Oh nvidia.

I don't see a disc drive so it's probably digital only..or can we plug an external hard drive?

Also, does anybody know of their exclusives? While I get that it's cheap and powerful, I'll still get a Wii U if only for Xenoblade, and possibly PS4 for FFXV. Why would I want to get an android mega console?

EDIT: Hmmm...now I'm thinking of porting my Super Tiny Monkey for the Shield just for teh heck of it, lol.

Have you been living under a rock for the past 3 years?

Should it be added as a new competitor to the big three?

That is the big question. I'm leaning towards no. Not unless they find a way to add original content. Which means first party games. If this doesn't happen, then I don't think they should be taken seriously as a competitor to the 3.

I agree, or atleast paying 2nd party developers to release games exclusively.
