As somebody who works with adults with intellectual disabilities, this is an interesting topic to me...
If we refer to an individual to whom we provide services as retarded, we are violating their rights...
But to refer to their disability as mental retardation (whether it :а мф с mild, moderate, severe, or profound), is still entirely acceptable, despite whatever lawmakers might say...
Academic researchers are still more likely to use mental retardation than use intellectual disability (or even developmental disability) when it comes time to write their reports and articles...
As important as it might be to have a form sense of the language we should be using when advocating for the rights of those living with MR, such an intense focus on this particular topic has resulted in a complete absence of dialogue on more important issues (such as sexuality and fertility, community integration, healthcare access and treatment protocol, to name a few more urgent topics)...

you work for the GOP?

and the word disability hurts people with disabilitys way harder than words like cripple or retard.

You took the time to post in this thread instead of creating a new thread to discuss "more important issues". From what I can see your most recent posts have all been in video game topics, save for this one. I would think that this thread is more meaningful to everyday life and how we act as people than the other threads you frequent.

I think he meant that experts lavish so much attention on what is the kindest and least stigmatizing thing we can call (insert your preferred term for retardates here) that there is not enough being done to improve their actual quality of life.

Ah, that makes more sense. If that is the case then I salute you leedlelee (and you badgenome)!

So we shouldn't protect people with down syndrome, a minority who can't protect themself from being called "retards"...??

They don't need protection they can stand up for themselves.

Clearly you haven't been around people with Down Syndrome otherwise you wouldn't say that.. They have on average the mental age of an 8 year old.. Sure some can live on their own but most live under supervision.. My cousin has it worse and is around the mental age of a 4 year old.. His movement skills are unstable, can't speak words, and i have to wipe his drool of his face.. If he has a mood swing i can barely control him.. He's taller then me and doesn't hold back his strenght and thats scary when you know he can overpower you easily. I love him so i would punch anyone calling him a retard. they are awesome people.. Not "retards"

Face the future.. Gamecenter ID: nikkom_nl (oh no he didn't!!)

What ever happened to the freedom of speech?

The problem, is freedom of speech as become an excuse for insulte. This is not freedom of speech is someone being a racsist Asshole.

That's true, but there's always going to be assholes, whether they're racist or not it shouldn't make a difference. It's just words, people need to learn a little self control and ignore the trolling pricks that just want to get a reaction out of you, if you start banning words other words will just take it's place.

I can understand why they do it, but it always strikes me as silly. As soon as you change the preferred word, the new word will become just as abused and mocked because the people themselves are the objects of scorn.

This was what I was thinking as well. People just need to stop being dicks to each other altogether. Until that happens there will always be a new bad word.
