Forums - Sales Discussion - Resident Evil, the sales of survival horror's biggest franchise.

Hey everyone, yesterday I use my free day to make content for yet another thread, however due to some problems I was unable to access chartz last night, so here you go. Got to post this from work, but at least got the pics on my imgur account.

So, all this is the official shipment data provided by Capcom themselves, this list includes only the title to ship over one million copies as that's the only information given:

Revelations also came out on 3DS, my bad in that part.

Note that Capcom only combines the sales of the games if the were released on more than one system at the same time, for example, RE5 came out on PS3 & 360 at the same time hence its sales are combined, however, something like Code:Veronica X first released on PS2 and later on the NGC which is why there's no data on how it did on NGC, Revelations is the exception of this rule for some reason.

As always, a nice bar graph showcasing the best to worst selling, however this graph includes all SKUs, as you can see up there there's 3 versions of RE4 and the original RE, in the graph below all those sales are combined.

Missing are sales from:

PC version of RE5.

PC version of RE6.

All PC versions of RE4 along with the HD uplift on PS3&360 as well as the mobile versions.

PC & Saturn versions of the original RE.

PC, N64, Dreamcast, NGC & game.com versions of RE2.

PC, Dreamcast & NGC versions of RE3

NGC & the HD uplift for Code: Veronica

Still, Japan numbers from nearly every RE game I have data for, notable absences are the games on Sega consoles and RE2 on N64.

This is very interesting data, indeed! :D

Good job, Kylee.

Regarding the data sales, it doesn't suprise me to see Resident Evil 5 on top, given that it was the first HD Resident Evil (I think?) and it also happens to be the most enjoyable of them all. I'm also glad for Resident Evil 6 successs. They would have never made so much numbers if it wasn't for the revolutionary Resident Evil 4 back then, which is strange considering the focus on action was present on Resident Evil 3 yet it's the least selling on the numbered entries. (Excluding Zero, uh).

I'm also wondering, did you count the digital sales of Chronicles on PSN for Umbrella Chronicles, Kylee?

I don't think you should put Survival Horror's biggest franchise on the title. People will screan that 5 and 6 aren't Survival Horror.

Bet with Xander XT:

I can beat more games on his 3DS than he can on my PSVita in a month. Loser has to buy the winner a game on his/her handheld Guess who won? http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread.php?id=193531

Me!

For the Umbrella Chronicles is just the Wii numbers as its says under platform.

RE3 didn't do so hot because it didn't had the feel of a true sequel, as it wasn't mean to be one in the first place.

Story goes that Capcom planned to make RE3 for the next gen systems after maxing out the original PlayStation, this next gen system was the Dreamcast, this is where RE3 was going to be while the PlayStation was going to get a spinoff, Resident Evil: Nemesis. However they supposedly had some sort of contract with Sony that said the had to release a numbered entry of the series on the system, so the PlayStation spinoff got a 3 shoehorned in, while the true succesor had to be rebranded.

The games were released months apart, so calling the Dreamcast game RE4 would've been a bad idea, having a subtitle instead of a number made Code: Veronica elss important which is why its so ignored.

RE3 is rad and all, but apart from Nemesis is just an expansion of RE2, and not even all that as Mr. X is the basis of the Nemesis idea.

Resident Evil 3 wasn't focused on action. The enemy count was already raised in RE2, but I wouldn't say that that counts as a focus on action, especially when we look at the direction the series took from RE4 onwards.

In Resident Evil 3 you could even fabricate ammo and choose what type you'd want, had you had the necessary items. Not only that, but it had the very first instance of Mercenaries Mode, plus some other things. I'm not saying it stopped being horror; I'm saying it definitively switched to killing and dispatching enemies rather than saving ammo and fleeing if circumstances were murky(Except for Nemesis).

Can you name a bigger franchise in survival horror?

I mean fine, 5 and 6 aren't true survival horror games sure, but the original and RE2 certainly are.

Looks like Vgcharts way off again.

Resident Evil 5 stands at 8.5 million on here without downloads.

Resident Evil 2 is at 5.8 million.

Resident Evil 4 is at 7.5 million.

Did they just guess when they put up these numbers?

And Resident Evil 2 had an easy mode that made ammo a non-issue. Granted, RE3 went even further with its easy mode, but it's still just an adjustment to the formula established by the first game, rather than going all out to make the series feel different.

As I said, the game didn't stop being horror. It just had a very noticeable switch to action, whether in easy or hard mode. (You're encouraged to kill and gun down even more enemies in Hard Mode since Nemesis drops special weapon parts or unique weapons are only present in this difficulty).

Also:

"Capcom also decided to give the game a more action-oriented style, which resulted in the 180-degree turn and the introduction of a dodge feature so that the player can avoid enemy attacks. Additionally, the developers designed the game so that up to nine enemies can appear at the same time and improved their artificial intelligence so that they can hunt the player up and down stairs."

This says that Resident Evil DC sold 1.1 million but Vgchartz has it at selling 3.7 million......

What platform is DL?
