I've seen countless threads everywhere stating that 2014 is the worst year for gaming, in recent years. After thinking a little about it, I have to disagree.
1) A LOT of people keep mentioning the high number of remasters as one of the reasons why this years sucks. That's a nonsensical complain right there. Yeah yeah, I get it, "I don't wanna play what I already played, with shinnier graphics", but does the mere EXISTENCE of these remasters bother you so much...? What about people who never played the original games because they didn't have the right console? Also, unless I forgot something, there were about 9 remasters this year. Sounds reasonable.
2) The whole Watch Dogs and Destiny fiasco. Yes, they were hyped as the next coming of Christ. Yes, they didn't live up to the hype. Yes, Watch Dogs was severely downgraded. But just because of that, do we have to treat them as the second coming of Satan instead? The reviews tell me that neither game is bad - in fact, they are well above average. At worst, they are the kind of games that some people love and some people find pretty boring (especially Destiny). If you forget the overhype, the downgrade, what you have left are two potentially fun games.
3) Still on that subject, we have the major clusterfuck that was AC Unity. Now this one deserves all the backlash, the game is downright BROKEN. But that's ONE GAME. I think that this year have showed us that we see the big AAA titles as a termometer for the whole year. This year, the big names disappointed, so the whole year was crucified. Last year, we had The Last of Us, Tomb Raider and Bioshock Infinite (and AC4), so the whole year was praised. But what about the other games? On that...
4) This is the EXTREMELY subjective part. I decided to see which games released in 2014 I'd be interested enough to buy, or at the very least check them out. I counted 32 games, and that's NOT including remasters of any kind. That's an average of over 2 games per month right there. So aren't people exaggerating a little bit on the 2014 hate bandwagon...?
tl;dr: remasters are not that bad, Watch Dogs and Destiny are not horrible, the disappointment of the most hyped games of the year DOES NOT summarize the entire year, there were plenty of good or interesting games released this year.
