Forums - Sony Discussion - Bloodborne Producer: Targeting 30 FPS because it's better for action games

I really don't see why people care so much.

in the 16bit era, people careed about how many "sprites" each console could render on screen at a time and things like "mode 8".

In the PS1/N64. It was more about storage media and what using CDs as opposed to catridges could do for you. People also said the N64 games always looked smoother but no one really cared t know why.

In the PS2/Dc/XB/GC era, it was more of the same as the previous gen but now people were talking about things like lighting and texture detail and how big worlds could be.

PS360 gen people were talking about differences in framerates and coloraccuracy and some different geometry tidbits here or there "the PS3 can't render grass".

Now, people are talking about framerate and resolution/texture detail cause thats the only conceivable way to differentiate between PS4/XB1/WiiU/PC. This has got to be the most trivial need for such comparisons cause now more than ever all the games are content accurate. So now people care about things that they mostly wouldn't even notice unless they were running the games side by side eachother. So we go to sites that are doing that so we can see what we otherwise wouldn't have seen.

Its not that people care, its that they would always find something to care about. Everyone is insome way guilty of this. Right now, between the PC, PS4, XB1 or WiiU... gamers have delved into the most obscure metrics of comparison to justify why one platform of/or "choice" is better than the other. Its all really stupid if you ask me. Cause I don't think we are complaining about the things that we really should be complaining about.

eg, things like DLC or game prices. If gamers made as much a fuss about game prices, DLC that gets annouced before a game even comes out, lack of cross platform multiplayer support...etc by now the industry would have listened. But nooooo.... lets all bitch about pixels, AA and textures instead.

Announcer: We secretly replaced GamerX's 60fps/1080p game with Folgers coffee. Let's see if he notices....

Announcer: So, what do you think?
GamerX: The graphics are top notch!! So much fun, too.
Announcer: Well, surprise! This game wasn't 1080p/60fps at all. It was Folger's coffee the whole time.
GamerX: What!? Well then, it's automatically shit.
Announcer: But what about all of the fun you were having?

It's all about the trade off. Would you rather have better graphics and 30 fps or lesser graphics and 60 fps. It's always been like this on console. Developers, obviously, choose to focus on graphics in most cases. If you need 60 fps you have one choice and always have had one choice; PC.

Try to get a proper translation, he was talking about his game only, not "action games in general".

Anyway, it's "better" only because what they're trying to push is above that the PS4 can handle at 60 or so... 30fps is a compromise, they considered it was batter to take the fps hit and make the game look as it does as opposed to cut the details/effects down to hit 60...

This is a console game, so we don't get to make the choice, but when I was given the choice on PC I always cut the details until the game I want to play has a frame rate close to 60... playing at 30 or less over long periods of time is just not as satisfying... :-/

with what the PS4 can do at 1080p 60fps I would prefer games that have less details if necessary and higher frame rates (I would say that so far I was not disapointed, but there are a couple of 30fps games... the only one I own so far is DriveClub... but I try to stay away from those in general).

IIRC, back in days of CRTs, in all PC GPU benchmarks there was a clear line on graphs at 40fps representing minimal acceptable frame rate...eventually, Adaptive Sync will kick in and people will stop focusing on fps issue...well, at least not as much.

the reason why developers are now saying this because it saves them from looking bad that they cant hit 60fps efficiently as they original thought when XB1/PS4 released

they're getting lazy

Well they could achieve 1080p/60 fps with ease if they weren't pushing visuals so hard.

So I don't think this is a case of being lazy.

A solid 30 fps will be a big improvement compared to previous games

900p is also a big improvement we're seeing this gen. :-p

I kinda thought it was going for 60 fps, the graphics don't look great.

Oh well!!!

it's developed by a moderate Japanese team. They don't have the resources or capabilities to push hardware.

Well people tell me Sony has a hand in the development of this game.

Either way, its fine. Locked 30 fps with 1080p is nothing to sneeze at.

Japan Studio is assisting with development as they can, but that doesn't dramactically increase the size of their team. For what it's worth, I do think Bloodbourne is going to be the most technical solid game From Soft has ever made.

Bingo!

Visually it would take a hit on 7th gen, but the gameplay itself could remain intact.

The biggest flaw in your argument is you seem to think Dark Souls 2 is the full potential of 7th gen consoles. Those are just poorly optimized games.

Like i told you, the same thing can be Saïd for every AAA game on PS4/X1, even the most impressive coming, they are just 7th gen games with better ttech just like bloodborne, so i dont see your point.

No, you exagerated on how crippled a 7th gen port of Bloodborne would be.

Anyhow, its seems like we have ended in some place of agreement. Lets just end on that.

The translators strike again! Completely agree with the new statement, I'm perfectly fine with 30 fps if its more advantageous to focus elsewhere
