Forums - Sales Discussion - Nintendo and the NA market

The iOS/Android system is based on crappy games that crash all the time that you get for "free" after spending $100/month subscription to use the device. So many sectors in this economy have taken a hit because of the architecture available in smart phones. Think anyone buys a calculator anymore...or a flashlight...or porn.

To ask Nintendo to do what MS/Sony are doing to gain back an audience that they lost to Apple, Samsung, Google, etc, is to not understand the market Nintendo finds themselves in. I just don't think Nintendo will ever win back the "hardcore" crowd. They hate the kiddy games, and they hate when Nintendo tries to make something that isn't kiddy. That's my only point in all of this: Nintendo's problems are not necessarily of their own making. And I'd rather not lose a company to a generic status quo just to remain viable. As long as Nintendo can continue to create a device that ultimately will be profitable and thus ensure their future as a games developer, I won't mind that the system isn't as powerful as what MS/Sony continue to offer.

I personally love the graphics on the WiiU. Graphically there's a texture about most of the games that looks even more realistic than many of the "realistic" games that audiences currently enjoy. Maybe it's because I didn't jump in to an HD console last generation or because I don't have a high end PC, but it's enough for me. If I'm playing on a gimped system, it's hard for me to tell.

I think Nintendo should just go back to being more of the company they were in the 90s. They still basically made the same games, but you can't stop most of your Western development and then act befuddled that the West doesn't like your game systems.

It's like Microsoft being dumb founded that the Japanese don't take to the XBox.

I don't think they need to stop making any of the Japanese games they make, but they do need to swallow their pride and start investing in Western development again or they simply seriously cannot expect to have sustained success in the West.

If I was at NOA one of my lead suggestions would be to cut a deal with Disney/Marvel for Avengers/Guardians games (similar to the Star Wars deal Nintendo had in the 90s). That's something that can work for Nintendo instantly and appeals to kids and older players at the same time. I'd snatch up the (currently available) James Bond license too.

If they want to appeal to kids too I think they need to expand the appeal of their internal IP. Kid Icarus should be a cartoon series. If LEGO, Transformers, Ninja Turtles can use Hollywood to make movies about toy blocks/robots/karate turtles, Nintendo should also be taking a serious look at that too.

They need to hire someone ASAP who knows the Western market, because Iwata doesn't, and he's even admitted he doesn't really understand the Western market like the Japanese one.

Nintendo drastically changed their strategy for the eighth generation. All the things that sank the GameCube are back, but now they are present on the home console and handheld, so both suffer mightily.

A change in strategy for future generations opens the door for Nintendo to be successful again.

Actually they tried to pull a Wii with the Wii U and failed miserably. It's only recently that they seem to have switched to the Gamecube strategy.

Yeah Nintendo's 1st year for the Wii U ...

Nintendo Land, New Super Mario Bros. U, LEGO City, Sing Party, Wii Fit U, Wii Party U, Game & Wario, Mario & Sonic Winter Olympics.

Hell, honestly the 3D Land/World Mario games are designed to make 3D Mario easier for casuals to play.

The Wii U just shows how risky a strategy is when you bank everything on a gimmick controller -- sometimes it works, sometimes it fails miserably.

And that tablet controller is very much for casuals, they probably figured since those people liked tablets, they'd go for a tablet game controller.

Well,

For Wii U:
-The system isn't cool. Wii branding is dated and passe.
-It lacks the biggest franchises such as GTA, COD.
-It lacks power, and the coolness that comes with that.
-It's marketed to kids, which means kids don't wan it.
-and most of all, core Wii gamers picked up a PS360 and don't see Wii U as an upgrade.

3DS is doing OK, but is being attacked by smart devices.

Nintendo needs to revamp their image and come out with more premium products that kids today want, and adults aren't embarrassed of. They need some western core titles and/or innovative new games that will get great word of mouth as the next big thing. And they should embrace nostalgia and give people systems that remind them of their youth: aka, cool, gamer-focused, powerful, and with adult games and marketing; and possibly labelled NES. No Wii.

Wii brand is the Blackberry or MySpace of video game brands (aka: I can't believe I actually used this thing waaaaay back in like ... 2006 brands).

They honestly should just make a $200 Android tablet. eShop only store (like Amazon's Kindle), only allow the top selling Android games and make them $2.99 a pop instead of 99 cents and pocket $2 each as a licensing fee. Then throw in NES, SNES, Genesis, N64, GB/A, DS, 3DS software. All the other Android apps (Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Google Maps, Chrome, etc.) are available the same as any other tablet. And don't make it look like a freaking kids toy.

Gaurunteed IMO this would sell better than the 3DS or Wii U in North America and Europe. Probably even Japan too.

But yeah Nintendo has a severe issue of not being "cool". Kids don't want a "kids console". No one does.

I strongly agree.  The only thing is I don't think they should go cheap.  Every parent I know is willing to buy their kid an iPad, even if they don't have a lot of money.  To get to the same level of cool, I think they need to be in the same price range and quality of iPads.  They should pitch that it's even BETTER than iPads, because it can play real high-end console games as well as all the apps, and launch it with SM3DW and a few others.  It should be the start of a new image with a new asthetic, though I would probably offer a retro-themed option as well.

Then build a kick-ass home console that partners with it.  The tablet could link with it like a Gamepad to provide a second screen.  Release some sort of multiplayer shooter or other style of game that can use tablets as player screens.  A Goldeneye for a new generation that allows a lan-party like environment using one system and 4 or more tablets in one room.  Set up some demonstration booths and every kid will want to have that experience with their friends.

Absolutely nailed it. Would buy this in a heartbeat (so long as Nintendo stayed well away from the OS).

The west likes Shooters, more specifically, first person multiplier shooters. Nintendo needs to create a great multiplier shooter with modern or futuristic combat.

They could easily expand the Metroid universe by creating a Halo type series with the Galactic Federation.

Nintendo missed the boat with low-budget/indie Western games too.

Look at games like Minecraft, Angry Birds, Candy Crush, Farmville, Plants Vs. Zombies breaking out in the West to become big hits ... these aren't "dudebros" games, but Nintendo doesn't engage with this community either.

Unfortunately for Nintendo these games are killing them in the West, they are taking the kids and casual market away. Even amiibo ... they are late to this party after Skylanders broke out years ago.

Oh yeah? What about The Letter?

That is one of the worst ideas I have ever heard. I guarentee it would not sell.
