Well,

For Wii U:
-The system isn't cool. Wii branding is dated and passe.
-It lacks the biggest franchises such as GTA, COD.
-It lacks power, and the coolness that comes with that.
-It's marketed to kids, which means kids don't wan it.
-and most of all, core Wii gamers picked up a PS360 and don't see Wii U as an upgrade.

3DS is doing OK, but is being attacked by smart devices.

Nintendo needs to revamp their image and come out with more premium products that kids today want, and adults aren't embarrassed of. They need some western core titles and/or innovative new games that will get great word of mouth as the next big thing. And they should embrace nostalgia and give people systems that remind them of their youth: aka, cool, gamer-focused, powerful, and with adult games and marketing; and possibly labelled NES. No Wii.

Wii brand is the Blackberry or MySpace of video game brands (aka: I can't believe I actually used this thing waaaaay back in like ... 2006 brands).

They honestly should just make a $200 Android tablet. eShop only store (like Amazon's Kindle), only allow the top selling Android games and make them $2.99 a pop instead of 99 cents and pocket $2 each as a licensing fee. Then throw in NES, SNES, Genesis, N64, GB/A, DS, 3DS software. All the other Android apps (Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Google Maps, Chrome, etc.) are available the same as any other tablet. And don't make it look like a freaking kids toy.

Gaurunteed IMO this would sell better than the 3DS or Wii U in North America and Europe. Probably even Japan too.

But yeah Nintendo has a severe issue of not being "cool". Kids don't want a "kids console". No one does.
