Forums - Gaming Discussion - Why all the Gamestop hate?

They are not terrible or great but it just feels like they rarely have deals that make you run to the store. The only times I've been there in the last couple of times were for the pokemon figures, Zelda WW HD ganon statue, and SMT4 for $10. I wish they had better deals but their flyer mainly just promotes pre-ordering for extra content instead of saving money. Yes they are great for a good used game return policy. Yes I'm glad they helped bring Xenoblade to the U.S. I just don't care about pre-ordering the amount that Gamestop pushes its customers to do.

I can get games cheaper online or at Bestbuy since I got 20% off new games there and most of the time that price is lower than a used price at Gamestop. Heck, I pre-ordered the the Smash for Wii U for $80 and I saved $20 for a game that I knew I would buy the collectors edition of anyways. What does Gamestop have when you are a member and want to buy that edition? Just a sheet of the characters in the game and other games you can pre-order.

That is why I think people dislike Gamestop. They tend to push pre-orders on people than give the customers deals. Maybe I just don't see the value that much since I am more of a PC/ Nintendo gamer, but it just seems like my mentality is to find the best deal on a game and to me Gamestop rarely has it.

BTW I get my games delivered early in the morning or even the day before. Would be nonsensical for me to walk out of the house and wait for stores to open.

What kinda service is that? Amazon send out the game before you even ordered it?

Of course: http://blogs.wsj.com/digits/2014/01/17/amazon-wants-to-ship-your-package-before-you-buy-it/

Why should Amazon wait for you to click.

i dont like GS b/c here they took over the mom and pop game stores, there not really a game store so to say when they bought out funcoland ect they had all the vintage used nes snes sega games in store but phased them out now they got sections for phones and stuff too it just doest feel right to an older gamer like my self

i also dont like em b/c there to hard on the consumer you cant just go in there and browse buy something and get out there always pushing shit on you like membership stuff or preorders

there used game prices are insane and the money they give for your stuff is even more insane

the last game i bought from a GS was UC2 and upon further examination they actually took the game out of the original seal and put it in there own type of seal which was harder/impossible to reseal and return

i'll give em one thing though some of there female employes are hawt as hell

I think its cause the employees that work there are all over the place... Like for example, the one I go to, there is this employee thats a giant xbox fan and everytime I go there, he tries to sell an xbox one or an xbox game and etc even though all I want is my wiiU/3ds/ps3 game and I told him many times that I dont want an xbox one. Compare that to say Walmart where they don't really care what you buy and they wont consistently tell u to get another system. Least thats from my experience anyway

There you go. They have the worst, most ignorant and annoying employees and managers.I got into it with them before back when they had the return anygame for any reason policy within 10 days and only went there again when i cannot find a game in stores elsewhere. Then every time you go there they tr to get you to pre order stuff or sign up for their stupid rewards card and a typically 2 minute transaction at other stores turns into a 5minute plus transaction at GS.I also had the same experience with the Xbox employees back when it was popular to bash the PS3 and love the 360.Screw GS, there policies are crap and Best Buy has the better trade in deals and actually give you money.

Hmm if what you guys is saying is true sounds like worker's that need to be better trained.

this stuff wouldn't fly in my stores. The pushiness is supposed to be a thing of the past and it sounds like old habits die hard for some employees.

The managers are just as bad and most people I know say the same no matter where we go in Maryland.GS is just trash period in this entire state.

I think Gamestop knows they're in trouble, the more digital consoles become the less relevant they become.

Side note: I don't hate GameStop, I have a Power up rewards pro membership. Although I don't think I'll be renewing that when the time comes simply because I don't shop there as much as I used too.

Gamestop serves the filthy casuals. We are hardcore gamers. We don't dabble in casual affairs.

I think two main reasons people don't like GameStop are 1) they feel like they're getting a raw deal for their trade-ins, and 2) they don't like being pestered to preorder games or subscribe to Game Informer. Well, for point #1, that's just the price you pay for going through a middle man. The retailer margins for new product are slim, and while most of GameStop's revenue comes from new product, most of their profit comes from selling used product. GameStop isn't trying to screw you. They're just trying to make a buck by offering a convenient way for consumers to recoup some of their costs by selling off games they don't want. You want a better deal on your used games? Sell directly to the end user through eBay or whatever. It takes more work and doesn't guarantee immediate gratification, but the payoff will be greater.

As for point #2, the reason GS employees pester you for preorders and GI subs is because their jobs quite literally depend on it. They have a particular quota they have to reach, which is set by regional. I worked for GS for the summer a few years ago, and it was generally around 15-20% of all transactions that needed to have a preorder attached to it (oh, and if you cancel a preorder, it counts against the quota of the employee who has to cancel it). Management is ruthless about enforcing this. If you don't make your percentage enough days, you get your hours cut. If it keeps up, you get cut from the schedule completely (at least the one I worked at never actually fires people, just drops them to zero hours and has them resign so they don't have to pay into unemployment). It wouldn't be so bad if the percentages were more reasonable and took into account that the vast majority of customers that come in are not going to want to preorder anything, and those that do came in with the express purpose of preordering something. If you ever wonder why GS has such a high turnover rate for non-management personnel, well, there you go. It sucks working there for that very reason and that reason alone. If they didn't have mandatory preorder quotas, it would actually be a decent place to work.

I did temp work for them for the holidays 2012, it was pretty fun, though probably didn't expect me to make "sales", so that was why.

Actually thinking of trying again this holiday, since i'll be working for my school for the next two semesters, and the hours will dry up over the holidays (when i'll need the money the most).

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

Because they fuck you over as a customer, they constantly try to push bullshit you don't want nor need on you when you buy stuff, and quite frankly, many of their employees are snobbish assholes. That has been my experience anyway.

I haven't shopped there since my Wii U pre-order almost 2 years ago. I had enough of their BS after that. Now, I'll go to Best Buy, Amazon, wherever. Just not there.
