Im really glad u gave a shout out to Deftones, they are one of my favorite bands nd extremely under appreciaed. Even after 20 or so years they are still evolving as artists and its rare for a band to be around that long without starting to make the same music over and over again. By chance have u listened to Chino's side project, Crosses? If not u should check them out.

I have heard them and they are also quite good. I don't like them quite as much as Deftones but I do listen to them every once in a while. Ya know, for years I said I didn't like Deftones because I really only heard one or two songs, and then I heard the song Passenger (with MJK) and realized that their was a lot more to them than I expected. I still don't really love the Nu Metal influences on some of their early stuff but when they don't mess with that too much, I love their music.

I completely agree, as a kid I didnt dislike them but at the same time they werent anything special, just an alright band. With White Pony they started showing they were more than just another nu metal band and could branch out and do new things. There two most recent albums, Diamond Eyes and Koi No Yokon are pretty amazing.

Meh, halfway decent song but definitely not a contender for song of the summer. PSY's Hangover is much more of a contender since its closing in on 100 million views.

Because it's PSY, not because it's good.

The video is actually pretty good and the song is decent thanks to Snoop Dogs inclusion.

I'm getting old, didn't know there was a new PSY song. OMG, that was awful!

Snoop Dogg would do anything for money nowadays... Even weird stuff like the Call of Duty voice pack or the Rayman Legends commercial.

Speed metal is if you're trying to annoy the landlord by banging on your pots and pans screaming at the top of your lungs. [/notalent]

That's probably the most ignorant thing I have read on here.  Congrats.

Indeed. There's a lot of bands in this list that I really like. I've been a metalhead since I was a kid, having grown up listening to old Metallica, Megadeth, and Maiden back in the 80s.

Yeah, I've been a metalhead for about 20 years. Started off with the classics like Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax, etc, and moved on to where today I listen to everything from thrash, death, black, power, NWOBHM, etc.

I do kind of have a problem with the whole "speed metal" category though. I find its lines blur too much with power metal, NWOBHM, and maybe thrash.  And you can have fast metal that's not speed metal.  So I tend not to use it.

I would consider Blind Guardian to be power metal.

Damn, I bit. I was expecting some type of speed metal. I guess its fine if you're a teenage girl or a teenage boy trying to impress a teenage girl.

I wouldn't say his comment is any more ignorant than the one he was replying to. Silly stereotypical blanket statements, is all.

OT: It's alright. Not really my cup of tea, though.

I would definitely say it's more ignorant, mainly because it's factually incorrect. Though the original coment was silly and not necessary.

Metal (granted, not all of it is super technical) takes a lot of talent despite what non-fans may think. You write songs THAT fast and THAT technical, and then play them night after night (on REAL instruments, even), you better have some serious talent in your instrument of choice. Much more so than your average pop song.  I'm not trying to start anything or be one of those people who say they listen to metal just to be shocking or whatever.  But I think most can agree that pop is the most manufactured and cookie cuttered genre. Aside from a few isolated artists, pop stars are a voice, and nothing else, with a bunch of producers and writers churning out easily digested ditties.  I think this image sums it up pretty well.

For what it's worth, I know that there are more technical genres of music out there than metal.  But metal is my expertise.  Jazz fans can pipe in about how their music of choice destroys all other genres if they want.

Man, I got teary-eyed all over again seeing scenes from this movie :(

That image...lmao! You don't have to argue the merits of metal vs pop with me. Whenever I watch those guitarists shredding away I can't keep my jaw off the floor. There isn't a lot to pop songs. They're usually short, and lacking in depth and diversity. They just have to be catchy and have a nice "hook." That said, I don't look down on, or find the need to belittle those who enjoy pop more than my chosen style of music. After all, it's not like we're the one's who write and perform the music we so love to fight over, so what does it really matter how simple or complex the styles of music we listen to are?

And that's why I think both comments are equally silly. They're making ridiculous statements about the types of people who listen to different genres of music, neither of which have any basis in reality, imo.
