Forums - Sony Discussion - Sony: Expect fewer AAA Games

Less AAA's for Sony is still more IP's than the competition.

Around the Network

First off, while a Sony executive was the one talking about this, this is NOT just an issue facing Sony. It's not about Sony not supporting their console, or about some inability to get developers to support it. So will the haters PLEASE knock it off?

This is an issue with the ENTIRE INDUSTRY. It was talked about at the beginning of the Xbox 360/PS3 generation too. As the graphical complexity of the games increases, so do the costs involved with creating those graphics. Gamers are demanding higher and higher levels of quality, so the costs involved in developing those games increases as well! Take a look at the credits from your average NES or SNES game...then compare it to the credits on, say, Infamous: Second Son, or Assassin's Creed IV. Notice how many more names are on the newer game's credits? Yup, each one of them draws a paycheck for their work!

It's not unlike Hollywood movies. "Blockbusters" cost around $150 million or so (plus marketing), and you usually see a dozen or so per year...and lots more smaller movies all around them. It's NOT the death of the industry to see fewer games being produced, it just means that the games that DO come out will be fewer and further between...with smaller games filling in the gaps left behind.

Personally, I think that this is part of the industry maturing.

It's not surprising with costs getting higher and higher. Near the end of the PS3 era they were release like 8 major exclusives per year, and most of them ended up failing. Now they're going the Microsoft route of a release a few exclusives per year but giving each one major attention. Indie titles will fill in the gaps between major releases. Seems like a smart strategy to me.

But if Nintendo does it then doomed?

I dont understand

we know what happened to the OG xbox as soon as the 360 came out (very reason I didn't continue to the 360)

So glad I'm not the only one. Ironically, my OG still works while the 360 I got later on as a gift doesn't.

Yea.. I was pretty fine with the og Xbox when it came out. I got big hands so I was specifically fond of the duke, compared to the micros.   Halo 1 & 2, DOA, even the 1st Forza was fun..  I remember specifically having lan parties for halo 1 & 2 mp.. That was fun times.. My OG still works too.. But I've since modded it and use it mainly as an emu console.

Man.. I hate it when your girl has to leave my place to come back to you..

Sony can't keep up with the cost of development for a system that was out of date the minute it released?

It is funny you call it out of date when it very obviously is pushing the boundaries of graphical performance in games.

I have yet to see a game that pushes gpu's with 3.6tflop performance on pc...

That's bullshit and spoken like a real Fanboy ;) I don't need to own the most powerful console when there are fewer games who maybe use this power ;)

Just want to interject that MS is supporting the 360 becuase its profitable to do so, not because they have to.You are more rational (and exhausting to debate with lol), but this guy has the nerve to say 360 has nothing this year and being out for 9 years isn't anything noteworthy.

lol.. 9-10 years out, but support mainly for 7 years.. dude, it's okay..  talk about rationality.  i've yet to hear anything from you that doesn't somehow stealthly attempt to troll Sony, the PS3 or the Ps4.  fact is.. in the end, and since the beginning, ps gamers will be well supported beyond the 360's longevity because Sony doesn't abandon their gamers.  PS1 to 2 to 3.  What makes you think anything will change?  as for the xbox though, we know what happened to the OG xbox as soon as the 360 came out (very reason I didn't continue to the 360).  and it's eerily similar seeing what's happening to the 360 since the x1.  even with MS's short history, they've already developed that reputation for themselves..

And yes, MS has to support the 360 because they have to.  X1 at the moment isn't picking up enough sales to make it profitable..

Yawn......I get it Popeye, you have a serious superiority complex. I mean Im bias, but you take it to a whole new level, even going so far as turning Xbox's greatest milestones and making it seem like nothing. "Being out for 10 years = trash". Talk about a sore winner.
