Forums - Gaming Discussion - All Day 1 DLC is a BIG F*** You To Us Gamers, Agree or Disagree? (Releasing A Game Thats Incomplete for Extra $$)

I hate DLC in general.

+1

Day 1 DLC makes some sense because it gives the development team the opportunity to push out more content after the deadline is hit. Digital distribution is, of course, not beholden to all of the restrictions placed on retail. I'll wait and see before deciding whether or not Mario Golf is abusing the practice.

On-disc DLC? I can't defend that.

Here's the deal. Back in the day, when consoles weren't connected to the internet, companies COULDN'T chop up a game and sell it for more than whatever retail was. Now that they can, they are. It's not like they are getting more greedy. It's just that they have new ways to BE greedy and they're taking advantage of it.

If people don't like it, find a new hobby or play indie only. That's my opinion.

Also, back in the day the games were much, MUCH shorter. You could literally beat some of them in less than an hour. Without any cheats or anything. There was no way to save your progress or similar check points. The difficulty made games seems longer than they were. Do you think that in terms of content we don't get more now even without the dlc? From my experience, it sure seems to be the case.

Do we get more than the NES days? Sure. But the PS2 ear? No way. Games like, say, Mortal Kombat? Back on the PS2, they let you unlock rosters. Now? You have to buy those fighters etc. Games were much more packed 10 years ago then they are now...and ten bucks cheaper to boot lol

I think it's a little too broad to say "ALL Day 1 DLC is a big F you". To me, the big issue I have is when their DLC is clearly ready far ahead of time, but they refuse to include it on the disc/cartridge. On the flipside, there is an inherent delay between completing a game and releasing it, required for things like printing, shipping, etc. If they're using that time to create some extra content, I'm OK with it.

I'm also OK with cases where the DLC is free, obviously.

In the case of Mario Golf: World Tour, I do think it's a little wrong that Nintendo is going for this particular route. And it's not about the "season pass" part (which is fine in the way Nintendo is doing it, where they spell out exactly what you're getting - my issue is season passes that are left vague so that they can effectively renege on their offer if they want to), but the fact that content they probably had ready a month or two ago is being released as day 1 DLC at a price.

That all being said, it's also wrong to describe it as a case of a game being "incomplete", necessarily. Some games are made to feel incomplete without the DLC. Others have DLC that merely extend the game beyond completeness. For instance, using Mario Golf again as an example, the retail game itself has about the same number of courses/holes as previous Mario Golf games. The DLC extends it beyond that point.

My point, here, is that each case is different, and none of the increasingly-common online offerings in games (like microtransactions, DLC, etc) are inherently bad. What is bad is what some companies do with them, in order to try to maximise the amount of money they squeeze out of people who buy the game, rather than trying to maximise the number of people who buy the game.

Note: I've used Mario Golf as my example due to how recent the news of it is.

I still remember that fucking dlc salesman from Dragon Age Origins.

I should not be playing a game where some guy tells me about how he needs my help then demands $5 from me to do so.

I agree.

For me it only matters if I enjoy a game or not. So if some game with Day 1 DLC entertains me for 20 hours or so, I'm fine with that. But if a game only gives you a 4 hour campaign, I'm pissed, even if there is no DLC.

DLC is just the new way of distributing Add Ons and those have been around since forever. Console gamers had to get used to it, because apart from some exceptions, there weren't Add Ons for consoles back in the day. But in the end, there is good DLC and there is bad DLC. You just have to figure out for yourself what you like and what not and of course if you're willing to spend any money on it.

I miss the good old times of map editors though... Not only because Counter-Strike Maps were free, but also because custom maps were just so creative. Anybody remembers Aldi 2k or Rats? Fucking awesome!

Official member of VGC's Nintendo family, approved by the one and only RolStoppable. I feel honored.

Due to development time, I don't think Day 1 DLC should exist. It takes time to produce this content, it also takes time for it to get approved for PSN/XBL. Look at Titanfall 360, they delay it 2 weeks before release so in other words they could easy produce store disc copies in 2 weeks before release.

Hmm, pie.

Opinions on the matter?

Your examples are terrible, for instance the first two PSASBR character DLC was free for a limited time (and you didn't need own the game to add it to your downloads list), also Kat was very overpowered and not balanced well so clearly the characters were not finished by release day.

If you read the rest of the thread, you'll see that he was unaware of that and when we pointed that out to him, he changed his opinion over PSASBR, so props to him as far as I'm concerned.

I think people honestly think a game comes out a week after its done. What do you want dev teams to do after a game is completed while waiting MONTHS for it to go to retail? Get paid for nothing? Or work on something else.

At some point, you gotta call a game "done" and ship it.

As long as DLC adds to the game, and not completes the game, no one should have a problem with it.
